Embracer Group sells off Saber and Metro studio 4A Games

Embracer Group has been looking to sell off a number of its studios for around a year now, after a crucial investment deal failed to materialise. This has led to numerous studio shutdowns and layoffs, while other studios are being primed for sale. Saber Interactive is one of the studios getting out from under Embracer Group, with a deal being finalised this week. Saber will be taking a few good studios along with it though.

In an announcement post today, Embracer Group officially confirmed that it has ‘divested' in Saber Interactive, alongside many of the studio's on-going projects, including the Knights of the Old Republic Remake. Saber is now joining up with a private investment fund as part of a $247 million deal. However, as Bloomberg's Jason Schreier points out, Embracer Group's announcement does not paint the full picture.

While Embracer says it still may hang on to studios like 4A Games and Zen Studios, which are responsible for the Metro and Pinball games, Saber has confirmed its intention to pick up the options to take those studios along with them. That brings the total value of the sale to around $500 million, for Saber, 3D Realms, New World Interactive, Slipgate Ironworks, Mad Head Games, Fractured Byte, Digic, Sandbox Stategies, Nimble Giant and of course, Zen Studio and 4A Games.

KitGuru Says: Saber is taking many of its active projects with it, including an “already announced game based on a major license”, which in all likelihood is the highly anticipated KOTOR Remake. At least now Embracer's CEO can breathe a sigh of relief no longer having to face questions about the status of that game.
