Netflix users have been requesting an offline viewing feature for quite some time now and after plenty of consideration, the streaming service has finally made it happen. Starting from today, Netflix will be getting an offline viewing mode, allowing subscribers to download certain shows and movies to watch later when there is no access to the internet.
The new offline mode is only available for Android and iOS devices through the Netflix app and while subscribers do need to pay extra for things like Ultra-HD playback, offline viewing will be a free addition to all subscription tiers.
Offline playback isn't available for all titles but this is to be expected as most companies are notoriously strict when it comes to the rights it gives each service provider for specific movies and TV shows. That said, if you are a fan of Netflix's original content, all of that will be available for offline viewing.
Netflix has committed to adding additional shows and movies to its offline viewing lineup over time but it all depends on whether or not the company can secure the rights or not.
KitGuru Says: While you won't be able to watch the entire Netflix library in offline mode, you do get access to some pretty good shows and movies. As someone who spends quite a bit of time sat on the train going from A to B, I can see myself making good use of this feature, though I must admit I am quite surprised Netflix eventually gave in to the idea of offline viewing after years of shutting it down.
Great step to reducing piracy. Many people just dont have good enough internet to stream.
Very nice, happy to be able to watch some shows of my choice on my next flight or extended train ride.
And so another excuse for piracy goes down the drain, although pirates will probably complain that it’s not the entire library and that they are therefore still not taking out a subscription, because 10 a month for a service is super expensive and it should offer anything you could ever want (i.e., they just want unlimited content for free, and no service is every going to be good enough).
lol, everyone thinks this will reduce piracy. It’s only going to promote it and help it grow. Now, all it takes is one person to have a sub, or know someone with a sub. “Download” the movies for offline viewing and bam… now we have full fledged quality Netflix Original Movies and TV shows in their original playback format ready to be shared with the pirating communities.
Thanks Netflix! lol, we appreciate it.

I must have missed the part that says the downloaded files won’t be DRM protected. Could you enlighten us?
I don’t know if you’ve noticed… but DRM stopped working over 5+ years ago. If DRM was worth a damn, piracy wouldn’t be like it is now. All they do is put a minor delay on delivery for piracy with DRM. It won’t stop anything. Pirating communities are already posting on forums about the news of Netflix offline viewing.
The only thing this truly does is give pirating illiterate families a way to keep their kids in check in the car now. Well that, plus it gives certain communities a new source for high quality media… in terms of actual visual quality, not movie entertainment quality.
lol, he thinks DRM is worth a damn.
