Netgear has fixed the major problem with Nighthawk routers

Earlier this month a bug was discovered in Netgear Nighthawk routers that left them vulnerable to hacks. While there was much concern about how widespread the vulnerability was, Netgear has now addressed the problem and is rolling out a firmware update worldwide.

Models that were confirmed to be affected by the bug include the R6250, R6400, R6700, R7000, R7100LG, R7300, R7900 and R8000. Several others were found to be affected also following Netgear's investigation, with the full list available on the latest security advisory blog post.

The firmware update for the bug, which allowed unauthenticated web pages to pass form input directly to the command-line interface, is now available on the specific firmware update page for your model, links for which can be found here. Although not every model has a full-fix yet, for those that don't there are beta updates available, which should hold your hardware over until the final patch is released.

“NETGEAR is continuing to review our entire portfolio for other routers that might be affected by this vulnerability,” the company said in a statement. “If any other routers are affected by the same security vulnerability, we plan to release firmware to fix those as well.”

You can check the status of security updates, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Hopefully everyone who owns one of these routers gets around to updating their firmware as soon as possible, after all, this security flaw is critical. Do any of you currently own a Netgear Nighthawk router? Have you been able to update yet?

It will be good if they succeed. Here in my country routers are crap 🙁

  2. Most router owners will not know what firmware is

  3. Hopefully their service provider will guide them through, if they received their router through their provider.

  4. I doubt many isps will provide fairly high-end router’s such as these
And many isp router’s run custom firmware anyway
