World of Warcraft Nostalrius servers are returning this month

This has been a big year for World of Warcraft in more ways than one. Not only has the Legion expansion been incredibly successful so far, but a lot of attention has been brought to the possibility of legacy/vanilla servers. Legacy servers have been a hot topic ever since Blizzard lawyers sent a Cease and Desist letter over to Nostalrius, a private vanilla server provider. Since then, Blizzard's stance on private servers hasn't changed but the team behind Nostalrius is coming back for round two anyway.

The team behind Nostalrius had the opportunity to meet with Blizzard earlier this year to discuss legacy server support but since then, things have gone quiet on that front. According to Blizzard, the studio has not abandoned the legacy server idea just yet but Legion expansion content is keeping the WoW team quite busy at the moment. In the meantime, though, Nostalrius has decided to share its database and code with another private server project known as ‘Elysium'. This means all previous Nostalrius players will be able to access their old characters and items on Elysium servers but there will also be a ‘fresh start' server in place for those who wish to start again.

The servers will open on the 17th of December at 5PM in the UK, following a massive 10,000 player stress test.

KitGuru Says: As excited as some might be to see Nostalrius technically return under a new roof, Blizzard still takes a hard stance against private servers and this news will likely land on their radar quite soon. With that in mind, I do wonder how long this revival can possibly last.

KitGuru Games: Omni-movement culminates 30 years of FPS innovation

Black Ops 6 is officially here, bringing the innovative new Omni-movement system to the game. While on the surface a relatively simple change, I argue that Treyarch intimately studied DOOM and the past 30 years of first-person shooter evolution to craft one of the most satisfying gameplay systems yet.

  1. Well, by law, Blizzard must react to copyright infringement if they wish to keep copyright. If they are aware of it, they will shut it down – guaranteed.

  2. It is being hosted in Russia. I’m sure the Elysium project welcome them to try.

  3. The russian department of Blizzard will take care of that then – trust me, the only place in the world where Blizzard might not be able to intervene, is North Korea.

  4. Or china

  5. All Blizzard has made me and others do, is despise their regime. There can be any amount of loophole arguments made but inevitably people want to play this game, and they are only losing money if they piss off their fans!!!!

  6. haha love it

  7. -> Chinese Blizzard department.

  8. Blizzard may complain but it’s the country, where the server is based, that has to enforce a US intellectual property law. China doesn’t have the best record with that.

  9. No matter how I try to play, this game doesn’t really catch my interest… Have fun guys.

  11. First for Blizzard to provide vanilla servers would require a full support team since this would in reality be a totally different game. That would stress Blizzard’s support staff. Second they would lose current players to Elysium so they would be making a bad business decision not to stop them. Third they can not support a third party running a server since they would take the hit for anything that goes wrong and would end up providing some sort of support. Last a majority of people will get bored playing vanilla after the initial experience. So it will be a losing money not a good business decision.

  12. Didn’t the article say the UK?

  13. NoSenseRasmus <<<< This guy is right. Money talks. And i think the folks at Blizzard will be motivated to shut them down to since they did before and they wont like them doing this again. Motivation is a big factor to..
