Inside source claims ‘Half-Life 3’ doesn’t exist

Half-Life 3 is something that Valve fans have been clamouring after for years. Unfortunately, Valve has remained pretty silent on the issue for years and while there has been some evidence that half-life projects have been in development in the past, this week a ‘Valve Insider' has claimed that Half-Life 3 doesn't actually exist and it probably never will.

Game Informer has come across a trusted source who appears to have some knowledge of what is going on inside of Valve these days. According to the source,  groups of Valve employees have attempted to create new Half-Life games in the past, including an RTS and a life-action choice driven project but for some reason, they have all eventually been scrapped shortly after gaining traction.

The idea of Half-Life 2: Episode 3 “isn't sitting right with Gabe Newell and other people at Valve. Ultimately it just starves to death and what you have left is nothing going on with Half-Life”. The source goes on to explain that “every time a Half-Life project gets some gravity and then collapses, it becomes harder for the next one to start up”.

The full interview is quite interesting and gives some good insight into what has been going on at Valve in the last few years. However, it is important to note that the interviewer in this case could not verify all of the sources claims with a second source at Valve, so while they are ‘trusted', this information may not be entirely solid.

KitGuru Says: This whole interview was great to read but it doesn't paint the best picture for the future of Half-Life, which brings in to question what Valve is going to show off later this year

  1. The problem is this they sold everyone on how going with Episode releases for half life would make it so Valve could get each episode out a lot faster because they were much smaller than a full game release. It was all fine and dandy we got ep1 and 2 then it all fizzled out and we never got ep 3. I would think they should at least make the ep 3 but it leaves me wondering if there is even a market left for half life it has been a long time since we got anything new half life related.

I think they should do a short EP 3 which is built into the full Half life 3 game just to finish the older story off and then it continues with the new story it could even start several years down the road if they don’t want to use the same game character from the older series. The half life games were filled with a lot of story and a lot of action and that is why these games sold so well.

I have heard that Gabe does not like doing the number three for games have no idea why not. It also leaves me to believe we may never see a Left for Dead 3 even though we keep hearing small tidbits about it from time to time. Left for dead series was also not to bad as well it is to bad Valve made it I guess. Don’t get me wrong I like Valve they make some great games and steam is pretty good but with Gabe running to show and his fear of the number 3 these good games seem to just drift off into never never land after 2 series are released. I would buy Half life 3 in a heart beat same with Left For Dead 3 if they ever came out.

  2. At this point I kind of wonder what Valve even do anymore. Do they just work on Dota 2 updates and peripherals while maintaining Steam?

Honestly though, when’s the last time Valve had new IP instead of just rehashing an old game? Portal? Am I just an idiot who can’t remember a really obvious example, or have they seriously not done anything new in 10 years?

After this long I don’t even want HL3 anymore. There’s no way they will ever be able to meet the expectations of the decade-old hype train. If they tried, I’m of the opinion that it would be the last game they ever made.

  3. Nikolas Karampelas

I have given up on HL3.
I want it, but I don’t expect it anymore.
And if it ever come back I’m afraid it will be like duke nukem, nice for the memories but a mediocre game.

  4. Gabe’s “fear” of the number is probably why Half Life 2 had an episode 1 and 2 in the first place 😛

  5. Yep that is pretty much dead on. I am just wondering why or where EP 3 went. It was all hyped to have 3 Episodes we got 2 of them then the hype train totally stopped. I would have liked to at least finish the series and be done with it if there was never going to be a HL3 release. Like others have said HL 3 would probably be doomed on release as there has been we to much time and hype over the years and it would most likely be a total let down if ever released mainly because story telling is modern games has changed so much over the years since the HL series came out.

  6. They all got stinking filthy rich and now are too lazy to make a game. Steam is their retirement plan. No problem, just long as steam continues to be so amazing.

  7. No surprise here. I can’t see them ever releasing a new Half Life. The Internet is a much different place now that it was 12 years ago, it’s been too long and there’s no way it could live up to the hype.

  8. Valve haven’t been into making games for a while. DOTA and CS:GO are simple upgrades of what already existed for competitive gamers i.e. a profitable market. For Valve, it’s all about small transactions over a long period, and HL3 wouldn’t adhere to this business model.
