Samsung is pushing to sell 60 million Galaxy S8 units this year

Samsung may have stumbled at the end of 2016 with the launch and recall of the Galaxy Note 7 but it looks like the company is looking to make up for that this year by doubling down on the Galaxy S8. According to reports this week, Samsung has set lofty expectations for its upcoming flagship, with hopes to sell more than 60 million units.

The company's sales expectations were revealed by an ‘industry insider' speaking with The Investor this week. To give you an idea of how huge this goal is, Samsung hasn't managed to break 60 million unit sales since the Galaxy S4. The S7, S6 and S5 all sold between 45 million and 48 million units, meanwhile the Galaxy S4 sold over 70 million.

Given these high expectations, it seems that Samsung is hoping that those who wanted the Galaxy Note 7 last year will instead opt for the Galaxy S8 in 2017, which seems odd given all of the negative PR that came around as a result of the Note 7 recall.

Right now we don't know much about the Galaxy S8, though reports are indicating that we won't be seeing it at the Mobile World Congress this year as Samsung wants to take some extra time to ensure there are no glaring problems. Other rumours include an ‘all screen' design, the removal of the headphone jack and the inclusion of LG batteries.

KitGuru Says: If the source on this is accurate, then it seems that Samsung is going to be making a huge push for the Galaxy S8 this year. However, I do wonder if 60 million sales will be achievable at this point, especially after the decline the Galaxy series has seen since 2013. Are any of you due a mobile upgrade this year?
