Intel said to launch Skylake X and X299 in August

It looks like Intel's next batch of enthusiast grade high-end processors will be heading our way this Summer as fresh rumours this week claim that Intel will be launching the X299 chipset and Skylake X processors in August.

This particular rumour comes from sources speaking with BenchLife, which has been accurate with information about upcoming Intel CPUs in the past. However, this particular report suggests that the Skylake X launch could take place at Gamescom, which seems like an odd choice given how much Intel's extreme edition CPUs cost.

It seems more likely that Intel would launch Skylake X at Computex in June, or even at the Intel Developer Forum, which takes place between the 15th and 17th of August this year, which is pretty close to Gamescom.

In terms of what to expect, Skylake X will likely retain the same lineup of CPUs as Broadwell-E, with a 10 core and 20 thread SKU sitting at the top of the pile, though hopefully without the current $1700 price tag. The eight core chip should also make an appearance, alongside two more affordable six core processors.

KitGuru Says: This is going to be an interesting year for CPUs, with Kaby Lake, Skylake X and AMD's Ryzen chips all hitting the market. Are any of you planning on upgrading your system this year? Are you waiting on new enthusiast CPUs from Intel?

  1. I don’t think so. Intel can’t retain the same price tags as now, because noone will buy them. If you have an AMD 8-core/16 thread, and that performs like the Intel 6900K, then why buy a $1000 CPU? Intel is scared of Ryzen and rightfully so. They have segmented the market, and now they have no space to move around with pricing. Intel WILL have to do an 8 core for at least $600 or they would loose it.

  2. Hopefully it does drive x299 prices down, but honestly Intel’s never been scared of AMD, they have 10-7nm chip almost ready for production, they waited to build an entire 7nm facility in Arizona because they had no competition, after 5 years of extra r&d they finally decided to start construction, 5 years of forward planning, ryzen will not surprise them at all. Not to mention they are already doing r&d on non silicone graphine chips for 2020+ production.

  3. Well surely AMD also got something up their sleeve. It is unlikely for them to have something planned on ahead of Ryzen, it that would be a screwup… They will be getting 7nm for Vega 20, I doubt that won’t include CPUs in Global Foundries

  4. Intel is $170 billion company, AMD is $13 billion company. We both know who has more resources.

  5. Show me a price drop Intel now that ryzen has arrived.pls

  6. Lets face it: Intel has excellent products with CPUs ranging between $100 (OLD ONES AND $20,000s for various grades of Zeons. Intel IS the market.
