Windows 10 now installed on more PCs than Windows 7 in UK

After around two years of convincing users to finally ditch Windows 7, it looks like Microsoft is making good progress, as Windows 10 market share has managed to surpass Windows 7 here in the UK, as well as in the US. So, while Microsoft may have finally admitted that its 1 billion installs goal may have perhaps been a bit too ambitious, Windows 10 does still seem to be growing at a decent rate.

According to data from StatCounter, Windows 10 closed out 2016 with a 26.9 percent share of the OS market, nearly double the amount it started the year with in the US. Windows 7 on the other hand has dropped from 35.97 percent to a 26.56 percent share of the OS market, dipping past Windows 10 in the US.

In the UK, the gap between Windows 10 and Windows 7 is a bit wider. According to the same report, Windows 10 started 2016 with 18.42 percent of the market and ended it with 31.02 percent. Windows 7 on the other hand started at 30.21 percent and dropped down to 21.49 percent.

Originally, Microsoft had hoped to get Windows 10 on to one billion devices by the end of 2018. However, that goal hinged largely on mobile devices selling well and as we all know, Microsoft's stake in the smartphone market is miniscule. Still, Microsoft may still hit that 1 billion device goal if things continue picking up like this.

KitGuru Says: I've never been the type to stick to an older OS when there is something newer on the table. However, I know plenty of people who were Windows 7 loyalists who wanted to cling to it for as long as possible. Are any of you still running Windows 7?
