AMD won’t be releasing Windows 7 drivers for Ryzen

If you are planning on upgrading to AMD's new Ryzen processors next month, then you may want to make sure that you are willing to make the jump from Windows 7 to Windows 10 as AMD has confirmed this week that it won't be shipping Ryzen drivers for the ageing operating system.

Recently, there was some speculation that AMD would be releasing Ryzen drivers for Windows 7 but the company clarified in a statement that it has only validated its CPUs across Windows 10 and Windows 7 but the latter won't be getting proper driver support.

Here's the statement sent to PCWorld: “To achieve the highest confidence in the performance of our AMD Ryzen desktop processors (formerly code-named ‘Summit Ridge’), AMD validated them across two different OS generations, Windows 7 and 10. However, only support and drivers for Windows 10 will be provided in AMD Ryzen desktop processor production parts.”

Ryzen skipping over Windows 7 isn't a huge surprise given that Intel dropped official support with the launch of Kaby Lake. Microsoft itself has also stated that it will stop supporting newer CPUs on older generations of Windows in an effort to get new hardware buyers to move on to newer software.

KitGuru Says: I know quite a few of our readers still use Windows 7. Though I must admit, I've not had any real issues with 10 for quite some time. As great as Windows 7 is, it might finally be time to move on.

    I have Windows 10 Pro and I don’t have a complaint

  2. Windows 7 was a great OS. But like every living legend out there, it has to retire.

I was scared of windows 10 too (hello windows 8) but after I installed them I just can’t go back in 7 now. They are better, faster, less annoying and seem to utilize my hardware better.
But I didn’t knew we need drivers for the cpu…

  6. Yeah suprisingly. Its more to do with features and instruction sets. Also Intel rolls out CPU microcode updates that are applied by the windows kernel (same microcode updates as the ones in the bios but kernel applied ones only affect the os functionality and not hardware) which may fix critical bugs so i guess basically your left with an os that doesnt have any bug fuxes for the cpus, might be fine, or it might bsod on boot every time and never run…

oh I see, since it is getting in through windows I never noticed and I also had the idea that since the cpu is CISC everything is hardcoded anyway so I was left with the impression that CPUs are just plug n play.

  8. For what your cpu?
    Good luck with that

  9. Meh it was a failed joke.

  10. Not CPU drivers. Chipset drivers. It’s like you can slot a Kaby Lake CPU into a Z170 chipset and be running on W7 and W8.1 all day erry day without fault. But Z270 (the kaby lake chipset) requires W10. AMD is using a new chipset, so their new chipset will require drivers, and those drivers will only be created for W10. If you are willing to forego the drivers you could possibly install W7. And since W8.1 and W10 are basically the same OS, it’s possible you could install the W10 drivers on W8.1 and get that to work better, but it’s not a guarantee.

I wish they’d support 8.1 though; W10 is still a buggy mess and an extremely anti-consumer OS; Start 8 on 8.1 is pretty much a more stable W10 with more functionality for end users.

buggy mess? well I must be lucky or have lucky setup then, I find it more stable than 7 for my workstation.

  12. The vast majority of W10 users don’t notice anything. But it doesn’t mean things don’t happen.

  14. What about windows 8.1?

  15. There are a lot of unnecessary services running in the background in windows 10… This is what I consider a mess like D2ultima said. Maybe windows 7 is not better than 10, but still it’s “lighter”. Instead I use Windows 8 (updated to 8.1) since it’s an improved version of windows 7 (just before they started to “mess” it all around to make windows 10). In my opinion windows 8.1 is a most mature OS so far. To replace their stupid start screen I use Classic shell which is great.
