Nintendo to double Switch production following strong demand

At this point, the NIntendo Switch has sold more than 1.5 million units in just a matter of weeks. Unfortunately, this strong first fortnight of sales has left a lot of retailers out of stock in some countries, making the console harder to get. In response to this, Nintendo will be doubling production from next month onwards in an effort to catch up with strong demand.

In total, Nintendo is apparently aiming to have produced 16 million Switch consoles by the end of March 2018. If Nintendo can sell through all of that, then the Switch will have surpassed the Wii U's lifetime in a single year.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Nintendo will be shipping out around 2.5 million Switch units to retailers worldwide each month. This would all go to suggest that perhaps the Switch is on a similar track to the original Wii, which sold 20 million units in its first year and required similar levels of production to keep up with demand.

KitGuru Says: I was lucky and managed to grab one of the last Nintendo Switch consoles from NIntendo's UK store on launch weekend. Since then, they appear to have remained out of stock everywhere in the UK. Hopefully by April, Nintendo will be able to catch up with demand in order to capitalise on this initial wave of excitement for the system. Have any of you picked up a Switch yet? Are you enjoying it?

  1. I’d prefer games instead of consoles. I’ll buy it once I can enjoy more than Zelda.

  2. If I get a console it will be the Xbox Scorpio when it comes out. I don’t need a fancy tablet that tries to be a console as well.I will just get what best fits my needs & makes me happy. Now if you prefer this then power to you as that is what best fits your own needs.

  3. I’m waiting for Super Mario Oddessy. By then, any other good games will be a bonus.

  4. UK seems to have better stock than the US. It’s been in stock on Nintendo UK online store for a few days now. Also two e-retailers have them available for pre order when stocks come in around Mar 31st. Maybe all places will get stock around the end of the month
