Apple will be launching an iMac Pro while we all wait for the Mac Pro redesign

Yesterday, Apple did something very uncharacteristic for the company- it admitted it screwed up and openly talked about upcoming design changes. This was all in regards to the Mac Pro, which received a major redesign back in 2013. While it was a powerful machine with a bold redesign, it didn't leave any room for upgrades and the system wasn't modular at all. As a result, the Mac Pro has been taken back to the drawing board. However, it looks like Apple is also planning on showing the iMac some love this year too.

Over the last couple of years, it has seemed like maybe Apple is abandoning the professional market. The MacBook Pro 2016 wasn't the best upgrade and the Mac Pro is dated at this point. However, Apple is looking to restore faith over the next two years, we'll be getting a new Mac Pro in 2018 but this year, Apple is hoping to win us over with a ‘Pro' model iMac all-in-one.

Speaking once again with Buzzfeed, Apple's Phil Schiller explained that Apple has “big plans for the iMac”, which will include “configurations of iMac specifically with the pro customer in mind”. Specifics weren't exactly revealed at the time but we can expect touch screens to not enter the equation, with Schiller saying that “Touch doesn't even register on the list of things pro users are interested in talking about”.

Instead, it seems Apple has the right idea this time, with Schiller saying Pro users are mainly interested in “performance, storage and expandability”. With that in mind, perhaps we will see the Pro iMac come with better options for upgradeability, larger storage options and higher power chips. Maybe we will even see Apple make the jump from Intel CPUs to Ryzen, as AMD and Apple have been working together more often over the last few years.

KitGuru Says: Seeing Apple address the concerns of its pro customers is encouraging. I'm a MacBook Pro user myself, though I would have gone with a desktop system if there were better options available for my needs in particular. Hopefully Apple will start to restore some faith in its Mac Pro and iMac lines over the next 12 months.
