The Nintendo Switch launched last Friday and while the game library is fairly small at the moment, it seems plenty of people have been excited enough to jump in at launch, with the Switch reportedly going on to become Nintendo's fastest selling console in history. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has also gone on to become the best selling launch title for the company too.
This week, a New York Times journalist had the opportunity to speak with Nintendo of America's president, Reggie Fils-Aime, who claimed that over its first few days on the market, the Nintendo Switch sold more than any system in the company's history, dethroning the Nintendo Wii.
As you might expect, the main reason people are picking up the Nintendo Switch right now is the launch of the new Zelda game, which has been in the works for years now. The game has been getting high praise across the board and is currently one of the top 5 highest rated games of all time on Metacritic.
While all of this is good news, it is important to note that launch weeks generally start strong and don't necessarily indicate how the console will do over time. Nintendo is going to have to keep delivering games to keep the momentum going, if game releases stagnate too much, then it could end up in a bad position once again.
KitGuru Says: I went ahead and bought a Nintendo Switch over the weekend and while I do love the system, I do think Nintendo needs to get a few more games under its belt for 2017 to keep current owners interested. Did any of you end up grabbing a Nintendo Switch this weekend? What do you think of it so far?
The new Zelda looks amazing, but it’s still surprising. The connectivity problems and the even for a launch limited library makes it a very unappealing console. I wonder why even more people are buying it than the Wii at launch.
I’ve seen a compilation of problems for the Switch ranging from the classic disconnecting left joycon to the docking station scratching the screen after only a few uses, game cards becoming unreadable, dead pixels that Nintendo will refuse to be held accountable for and outright system and hardware failures in the first week. And who can forget the controller protector slider things and the fact that if you put the wrong one in the wrong controller then, well, time to buy a new controller because that shit is stuck for good.
It’s good that they’re selling so well, I think they’ll need the extra money

Not a massive surprise – due to the Wii U having a complete lack of games, the die hard Nintendo fans were going to snap up a successor incredibly quickly. However, I doubt the Switch has the strength to do anything more than have a few strong months, and then it’ll be down to the strength of third party support to see if it gets anywhere.
All you nintendo haters just don’t get it. It always has and always will be about the games. How many of us bought a gameboy in the 90’s just for Link’s Awakening? A lot.
Wii U just didn’t have that killer app game like this new zelda is.
SPEAKING OF LINKS AWAKENING….Did it have bleeding edge graphics? no. It just had good artwork, music, and gameplay. Many bullshit games on xbox and xbox 360, and xbone, have way better graphics then LINKS AWAKENING, and yet those are not and shall never be timeless classics.
Links Awakening is.
But people to this day just don’t get it, and claim “THE SWITCH IS WEAKER THEN THE PS4? IT WILL FLOP!” hah you are wronk! very very WRONK!
No go back to your call of poopey kids, on PS SCORPIO or whatever if is, who gives a shit. It has sick graphics and it’s boring as crap. Have a nice day.
Every year there is a new madden and a new call of duty and both are equally boring.
And by the way, screw the new zelda. Ark is freaking incredible on private pve servers, I hate all other games now. Double have a nice day, with extra sauce please.
