Radeon Software update adds support for Windows 10 Creators Update and 8K output

Microsoft's rollout of the Windows 10 Creators Update has officially begun this week, which means there there are going to be plenty of changes. As a result, anyone upgrading their version of Windows 10 should also make sure to remember to upgrade their GPU drivers. Nvidia's Creators Update compatible driver has already begun rolling out via the GeForce Experience and today, AMD has published its latest drivers for the update too.

From today, Radeon graphics card users should be able to upgrade to Radeon Software Driver 17.4.2 and Radeon Pro Software Driver 17.4.2, which are specifically designed for the release of the Windows 10 Creators Update by Microsoft. This update adds in various 3D and mixed reality features to Windows alongside some gaming-oriented features.

AMD's new driver also enables professionals to create and review 8K content in its native resolution with upcoming Radeon Pro Solid State Graphics (SSG) technology. The SSG will enable real-time post-production of 8K video. The update also enables 8K output on Radeon Pro graphics cards with the necessary hardware support, currently the Radeon Pro WX 7100, 5100 and 4100.

With this new update, gamers can expect better support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) displays, with support now baked in for Radeon FreeSync 2 monitors, which supports variable refresh rates in addition to HDR. With the Creators Update, HDR can now be enabled within all applications. The second update for gamers is ‘Windows Game Mode', which allocates more CPU and GPU resources to the application in the foreground, rather than allowing those resources to be taken up by background processes. This should lead to a small performance bump in games.

Elsewhere, this update also improve security for Windows, with an all new Windows Defender and tools designed to keep your IP address secure.

KitGuru Says: I have yet to install the new Windows 10 update but I'm sure it will hit my machine soon enough. If any of you are updating, then be sure to grab the latest GPU drivers too.
