Leo gets his grubby mitts on the £900 CM ‘Made In Japan’ PSU

A few weeks ago my colleague Allan reviewed the new Cooler Master Masterwatt Maker 1200W ‘Made In Japan' power supply (HERE). This hand made, limited edition PSU was clearly created as a halo product with a ‘no expense' spared design ethos. I asked Allan if he would send it over to me after this review and he duly obliged. It isn't often KitGuru hands out 9.5 out of 10 scores so I wanted to see what the fuss was all about.

There is no doubt that this HALO power supply is a work of art. From the massive, beautifully designed box to the individual cable pouches which resemble cases for headphone storage, initial impressions are certainly positive – the unboxing experience sets the tone for an upcoming system build.

It is inside the power supply that we can see just how much work has went into the design – ironically, most people who will buy this power supply will never open it. Technically the unit is close to faultless – we documented 96.5% efficiency and ripple suppression is at the highest levels we have recorded in the last 5 years.

Murata are the Cooler Master OEM partner responsible for the design, and when parts weren't at a high enough standard they created them from scratch – just for this power supply. Most of us will never be able to justify spending close to £900 on a power supply, but we can certainly appreciate the engineering prowess that has went into the creation.

Murata have even discussed the fact that they invented a new type of power transformer just for the MasterWatt Maker 1200W MIJ. This won't be used in any other power supply.

  1. Very nice power supply indeed. But way to costly for my needs and wallet. This seems to be the trend with anything computer related these days. The companies see that there are enough tards in the world willing to part with their cash no matter what it costs. I say to you fools stop being dumb you do realize if you don’t pay the stupid tax these companies will just release same types of products but at lower prices. Stop feeding the dragon already it will only get worse and then no one will be able to afford new toys. But yea very well made PSU but you know something is wrong when Cooler Master has the balls to charge this much for a PSU I say this because yes they fairly good products but lets face it they are a second or third tier company depending which product sector you are looking at.

  2. I would assume you read about the Murata developed power supply? Cooler Master don’t make power supplies. They buy in designs from OEM’s – often at specific price points. Murata (an ultra high end brand who make expensive server grade power supplies) hand made this one to CM design, hence the price.

Of course the price is tough to swallow, but its a HALO product, where price isn’t important. Worth reading the review I did via the links – there is a lot to this power supply – which often involved Murata building the parts JUST for this unit to achieve the best results.

  3. It’s limited edition and not intended for a wider audience… You’re basically saying “Why buy a Ferrari when you can drive a Clio?”… Some people have money to waste some people don’t… bitching and moaning about it isn’t going to do you any favours.

  6. Yea I get all of that my first was more about the industry as a whole releasing products way above what they should cost because they know there are enough fools that will either starve themselves or not pay their bills that month so they can get that shiny new way overpriced toy. If we as consumers voted with our wallets and stopped supporting these types of price hikes they would stop doing it but until then it will only get worse.

Yes CM don’t make this unit and it’s somewhat handcrafted and deserves a higher price I was talking about the everyday stuff you can buy for tech. How for every model video card they release like 15 models of the same thing with a slightly different fan and stickers every company is doing that. so you now get like 150 cards or more of the same thing. You would think hey with so much of the same thing flooding the market and competing for our money the prices would drop but nope they don’t. They play the supply and demand card oh the chips are in short supply etc etc. Well of coarse ther are supply problems the market has like 350 of the same model graphics cards out trying to get our money.

  7. Making money online through the internet is as super easy (or as stressful) quite as earning money off-line. 8. I think you went off into somewhat of a tangent there describing the video card market — and I know it might be a tough pill to swallow or hard to believe, but there are some people who wouldn’t think twice about £900 for a power supply. Those with big incomes who just want the best system that money can buy. People who buy an Intel Core i7 6950X processor at £1,600 matched up with two (or more) Titan X p cards in SLI at at £1200 each.

The Cooler Master MIJ is not a mainstream product for joe public, but from an engineering point of view it is hard not to be impressed.

  9. Yep you may be right and yes this PSU is pretty much top notch a 96.5% power rating is excellent and I guess if I had a income that I could buy anything my heart desired I probably would get it just to know I was one of the few that got this unit. My points still stand about the market as a whole mind you with 15 to 20 product releases of the same thing from each company. I mean 2 or 3 would be normal it gives you a a bit of a choice and maybe slightly different price points but 20 is a bit much.

Hey it does mean we get to see a lot more reviews of the same thing & I always like reading or watching reviews as it gives insight to a products inner working’s and performance so yea that is the geek in me showing there…lol

This is pretty much one of the best rated power supplies I have seen in a long time and with handcrafted parts it is a one of a kind as well.
