AMD RX 580 and RX 570 confirmed to be using Polaris 20

Following several weeks of leaks and a tiny bit of conflicting information regarding the GPU used on AMD's upcoming RX 580 and RX 570 graphics cards, we finally have confirmation of Polaris 20 XTX and Polaris 20 XL. Thanks to a driver leak this week, we now know that AMD's upcoming GPUs will be using updated Polaris chips.

While the RX 500 series will largely be a rebrand of the RX 400 series, it should feature some unique selling points. Back in 2016, it was reported that AMD had managed to improve the performance per watt of Polaris and shortly after that, Polaris 12 and Polaris XT2 details leaked.

Now it seems those reports were true. This week, Videocardz managed to get its hands on the launch driver for the RX 500 series and quickly combed through it to find whatever bits of information they could. In doing so, they came across codenames used for different graphics chips, confirming that the RX 580 would use a Polaris 20 XTX chip, meanwhile, the RX 570 will use a Polaris 20 XL chip.

The RX 560 was lacking from the list entirely but the RX 550 did make an appearance, sporting a Polaris 12 chip. Unfortunately, no details on the RX Vega were found.

KitGuru Says: With AMD implementing these revised Polaris parts into its graphics card lineup, it will be interesting to see how things stack up against last year's RX 400 series. There may not end up being a huge difference in raw performance but perhaps power savings will have received a boost. Either way, we should find out more soon as we get closer to launch.

  1. I’ve promised my 290X to a friend as a replacement for his dying GTX970 and my wife has promised me a Scorpio for Christmas so I’m following the RX580 closely. I’m sad to say that after more years than I care to count I’m opting out of enthusiast components. I just played through the Witcher and RoTTR and they looked fine to me at 1440p I don’t need some marketing guy telling me 120fps and a billion pixels will make the game so much better it’s all a load of bollocks, the things I remember from all my games are the moments of tension and the stories not how many strands of hair Lara had on her head. So my reason for upgrading is to get a quieter, cooler running card. Who tends to make the quietest cards?

  2. and yet sourced information a scant few days ago that states
GPU information for AMD Radeon RX 570 (Polaris 10)
GPU information for AMD Radeon RX 580 (Polaris 10)

which/what is it, are you 100% certain you have facts straight, or just another in the list of “media” trying to get site views in?

Going back 6+ mths, RX 500 series was a refresh based on updated/tuned polaris possibly Vega(which was quick debunked as Vega is its own family nomenclature) NOT polaris 10 like RX 480 is based upon. what an amazing world the internet is.

Just as bad as WFFCTECH as of late (which you all cited news from multiple occasions) am removing Kitguru from my favorites list, just not worth seeing the same rumor mill stuff posted elsewhere many times over.

  3. really depends on the brand and type of card. Your best bet is to wait till the AIB versions are out and watch reviews of them

  4. Yup I’m hoping for user experience rather than reviews, I have a Sapphire R9 290X Vapor-X which at the time was ‘the best of the best of the best’ according to reviews and while it certainly is the fastest and the coolest and probably matches a RX480 even today, it comes with the cost of having 3 smaller fans which ramp up pretty quick under any type of load and to me is excessively loud. 25c below reference is great but what’s the point if your fans are at 2500rpm. On top of that I’ve always had to buy cases larger than I’ve wanted because the thing is so long and it’s a triple slot monster.

  5. Gibabyte makes the most cost effective and efficient designs, while MSI gets you a more consistent product line. If you are after the quiet designs look no further than ‘reference’ cards or ‘founders edition’ on an extreme note. There is a hierarchy to even consider a comparison between premium components. You will find a lot of designs that feel like prototypes that scale down to better refinements with maturity. My advice will be to avoid any “open” heatsinks as this means less contact and overall tacky textures result to degradation.

  6. Whats funny is everyone ranting about power draw oh it uses to much power oh my bill bill will go up two bucks a year blah blah blah. Suck it up butter cups it is a gaming rig it use lots of power that’s what they do. So if this card uses more power who the F cares installed and enjoy it…. End of my anti rant…..Rant…lol

  7. Can AMD just sell it’s graphics devision to some other company that’s god damn more capable?! Someone like Samsung they are already everywhere in every industry might as well join this. They would be fkin able to have way better research and development budget and could compete with nvidia because as it stands EVERYONE IS LOSING. We need high end competition from AMD in graphics cards or else we all get screwed by nvidia this is coming from a gtx 1070 owner who’s optimistic about getting the next gen 1170 for 300 bucks hopefully just like the 970 but itll only happen if there’s some damn competition.

Samsung? Stop thinking because in your case it is counterproductive, braindead Nvdiot.

  10. They are capable, look at the history of their cards, if you wait you’ll get a decent from and but obviously you want the competition so you can buy off your favoured company. AMD drivers as re their only problem where they should try to purchase a bigger and better team

  11. AMD hardware can usually be undervolted to lower power consumption and generated heat without losing performance.
In cases where throttling is the issue, undervolting can result in a bit higher overall performance.

The Fury line for example was succesfully undervolted by others and brought down power consumption by quite a bit… making their efficiency effectively on par with Nvidia’s offerings at the time (980, etc.)/

  14. Lol mad? I’m brain dead? Why? Because i bought a gtx 1070 when it launched and more than a year later there still isn’t any card from AMD they can match it? Did i make a good choice or not? I game on 1440p and it’s a must for me to have a high end card. The only card AMD has that comes close is the fury x now two generations old but the thing is that it can’t match the 1070 it loses on most games so i mean i guess everyone who buys a high end nvidia card is considered to be brain dead according to you.

  15. That’s what I’m saying man I’m all for pro competition. It drives performance up and prices down what’s not to frickennnnn like about that? The thing is that AMD has had 3 chances last 3 generations to fuck up nvidia and they FAILED EVERY DAMN TIME. Like look at the 300 series Polaris and now this bs Polaris refresh. The problem is they need to expand and they need to get in fresh minds and hire top of the industry individuals to help them beat nvidia. They can’t do that without capital. Hence why I suggested they be bought off by a much bigger company like Samsung who could pour the fuck out of cash into making AMD great. It doesn’t have to be Samsung at all it could be any big company with deep pockets. It’ll be better for all of us if AMD has more funding for r and d
