This guy built his own iPhone using recycled parts from Chinese markets

The idea of building your own smartphone has been around for a long time but with projects like Phonebloks and Project Ara now dead, we are still far from making the concept a reality. However, one engineer decided to take things into his own hands and flew to China in order to obtain his own parts and build his own fully functional iPhone.

Scotty Allen recently put out a video going over his journey to Shenzhen, China, where he sourced all of the components required for an iPhone, before assembling it all himself. By the end of it, he had a fully functional 16GB iPhone 6s.

At this point, the video has gone viral, racking up over three million views in one week. Scotty Allen also published a detailed write up going over the process of building your own iPhone. However, some parts were harder to track down than others. In the end, Allen had to settle for an iPhone 6s, as there simply weren't enough recycled iPhone 7 parts on the market yet.

In all, the whole phone can be broken down in to four key parts, the screen, shell, battery and logic board. In all, these four main pieces ended up costing around $300 from market sources in China. However, in total, Allen did spend around $1000, with the extra mostly going towards parts and tools he didn't end up needing or using.

KitGuru Says: This isn't exactly the sort of project I see many people attempting to take on but it is still very interesting nonetheless. Have any of you guys ever thought about assembling your own smartphone from parts?
