Vodafone makes data roaming free in 40 countries ahead of EU law changes

We have known for some time that the European Union is planning to abolish mobile roaming charges across Europe. This new law doesn't come in to effect until June but it seems Vodafone is already prepared and will be making data roaming free in 40 countries.

Vodafone isn't the first UK network to jump on this, Three has been offering a similar service for a while now. However, it is nice to see more networks removing unnecessary roaming charges ahead of time. That said, to be eligible for Vodafone's free roaming service, you will need to be an upgrading or pay monthly customer.

Here's the full list of 40 countries where roaming charges no longer apply: Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canary Islands, Croatia, Channel Islands (inc Guernsey, Jersey), Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Faroe Islands, Finland, France (inc Corsica), French Territories (inc. French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte, Reunion, Saint Martin), Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy (inc Vatican City), Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal (inc Madeira), Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain (inc Canary and Balearic Islands), Sweden, San Marino, Switzerland, Turkey.

This comes ahead of the European Commission's plans to do away with roaming completely, within the EU. However, with Brexit now under way, the future of roaming charges for UK customers is currently unknown. Either way, we should be able to take advantage for now.

KitGuru Says: Roaming charges have always been pretty ridiculous, so it's nice to see them finally going away. Hopefully UK customers will be able to enjoy free roaming even after the exit from the European Union is complete.
