Report claims Apple is planning a Xeon powered iMac with ECC RAM

Earlier this year, Apple began sharing its plans for the future of its desktop systems. The next big Mac Pro refresh is coming in 2018 but in the meantime, Apple is said to be planning a ‘pro-grade' iMac all-in-one for release this year. Now reports this week claim to give us an idea of what to expect, including an Intel Xeon iMac, with ECC memory.

According to supply chain sources speaking with DigiTimes, Apple is planning an iMac with ‘server-grade' components, including an Intel Xeon E3-1285 processor and up to 64GB of ECC RAM.

This particular source isn't always accurate so take the information with a pinch of salt. However, given Apple's recent talks of new pro-level iMacs, this isn't a huge stretch. The report also claims that Apple will utilise NVMe SSD solutions for storage, with options going all the way up to 2TB.

Whether or not this is the ‘pro' iMac that Apple alluded to a few weeks ago still remains to be seen. However, perhaps we will find out more information at WWDC in June.

KitGuru Says: Given the iMac's thin form factor, I do wonder how Apple would even manage to cram that much hardware in there and manage to keep it cool. Either way, it would be interesting to see, though I'm not really putting much belief in this particular rumour.

  1. Would need to be paired with a digitiser if it was to make headways against the surface studio.

  2. Google is paying 97$ per hour! Work for few hours and have longer with friends & family! !mj209d:

  3. Gonna be really lame if it’s not paired with a workstation class discrete GPU. And fitting all that in the existing iMac form factor is impossible. I expect Kaby Lake CPUs and faster integrated graphics chips. Probably USB-C ports and improved 4K/5K displays (HDR). No way to rasterize that monitor this year, wouldn’t even make sense. I think all the true Pro goodies will be in the redesigned Mac Pro in 2018….iMac hopefully keeps same form factor and just gets cutting edge parts. Option for real video card like 1080 Ti would be awesome but I don’t see how it could be done…unless they put a shortened version in the spot where the HDD/Hybrid HD live now. You get a fast SSD (Samsung 960 Pro?) and DDR4 RAM support up to 64GB or so, but have to choose between a second HD or discrete video card. That would be awesome; I’d get the video card and keep all my data on my external NAS. 1TB or even 2TB M.2 SSD would be plenty for macOS and all installed apps, cache, etc. Make it happen, Apple! And keep the price within reason…. Mac Pro will be a different story, but iMac can only be at best a Prosumer item, for people like me who work in creative industry from home. Render farms and software/game developers have the money for whatever hardware they need basically, though it will be hard to win back the trust of people who left Mac ecosystem for Dell or similar. 4 years between Pro models with no explanation until a week or two ago? Not acceptable.

  4. Off topic but sure hope the iPad line gets straightened out. I’d do 3 vanilla models and 3 pro models. 7″ (iPad Mini, iPad Pro Mini), 10″ (iPad, iPad Pro), 13″ (iPad Plus, iPad Pro Plus). Keeps the naming in line with the phones (“Plus” for bigger model). Non-pro series would be pretty basic, similar to current models with a modest price drop – like the one they just released (Air 2 replacement). Pro models would have better screens, faster CPU/GPU, more RAM, different color options, better cameras, possible a USB-C port, and of course Apple Pencil 2 and hopefully better stands, cases, keyboards, and dedicated pro apps than the first generation did. My 12.9″ iPad Pro is cool, but it’s just a big, fast iPad; it could never replace my iMac or even a laptop. If they don’t want to get killed by the Surface Studio and HPs 2-in-1 devices, the “Pro” will actually have to mean something. Hell, I’d go for a 4K 17″ or 21″ iPad Pro Studio with crazy specs! As long as I don’t have to carry a laptop as well, or transfer things to the iMac to finish them with REAL software…it needs to be a complete solution. Add a damned SD port as well for photographers/videographers. And a port for a professional microphone. I know they won’t but it would be slick!
