While DDR4 RAM has only just broken into the mainstream in the last few years, the Joint Electronic Devices Engineering Council (JEDEC) is already looking ahead and planning out the jump to DDR5 memory. This week, it was revealed that the DDR5 memory specification is already being worked on, with the goal of offering double the density and bandwidth while lowering power usage.
The new DDR5 standard is currently poised to be published in 2018, so it's not far off. This new memory will double bandwidth and density over DDR4 while also delivering improved channel efficiency. These enhancements will help enable improved power management and higher performance in a range of applications.
Demand for DRAM capacity and bandwidth has been growing, so JEDEC is hoping to satiate that with not just DDR5 but with hybrid DIMM technologies like NVDIMM-P. This new technology will be a ‘high capacity persistent memory module for computing systems', these modules are non volatile but beyond that, not much is known this current time.
However, JEDEC will be presenting more details about DDR5 Memory and its new NVDIMM standard in June at its Server Forum event.
KitGuru Says: Work on the DDR5 Memory standard is already underway and we may end up seeing it in action fairly soon. As with any new standard, it will take a while for DDR5 to trickle down to mainstream motherboards, so for now, the introduction of DDR5 mainly impact servers and data centres.
if they were smart they would have a draft for allowing DDR5 to be used in DDR4 socket type deal, or those who just bought DDR4 motherboards are screwed and will have to go out yet again to buy new stuff, talk about throw away society, high tech needs think about environmental waste!
This is going to be like GDDR4, where it was basically rocket powered GDDR3, but soon after GDDR5 came out with QDR instead of DDR (i dont know why GDDR5 is classed as DDR since its 4 bits per pin per clock cycle rather than two, so its technically QDR – Quad Data Rate). Allowing double data rates and higher frequencies and lower power.
Please no. Keep DDR5 away, DDR4 isn’t even mature and DDR3 is a perfectly viable option. Don’t screw up the market with 3 types on the run at the same time…
Work on optimising DDR4 so we can be running 3200 C10 etc or even lower at 1.2v, and where’s DDR4L?
Beside, the specs will be published sometime 2018, specs for DDR4 were published in 2012 but we didn’t see any of it till 2014/15. I doubt we will see DDR5 till perhaps 2020-2021 for mainstream.
Well they care about money,so be sure that you will need to have a new motherboard
DDR5 wont be available for Consumers for a good 5-8 years from now.. Were just expect PCI-E v4 to come out and so far nothing takes full advantage of PCI-3 3Gen
a full life cycle of AMD Ryzen will have come and gone before DDR5 will be a thing on consumer mainboards
Well at least PCI-E 4 has the advantage of the socket being able to feed 300 Watts to cards, so even high end GPUs will be powered by the socket rather than needing power connectors as well.
