Samsung to be the sole supplier of iPhone 8 OLED panels

At this point, the next iPhone having an OLED display is all but confirmed. We've seen countless leaks over the last 12 months but the latest this week indicates that Samsung will once again be doing business with Apple, by becoming the sole supplier of curved OLED panels for the next iPhone.

According to sources speaking with ETNews, Samsung and Apple have penned a two year contract for Samsung Display to supply OLED panels for the next iPhone. This obviously isn't the first time Apple and Samsung have done business together, though this is the first time the two companies have cooperated since Apple dropped Samsung as one of the manufacturers of A-series iOS SoCs.

Samsung will apparently be manufacturing as many as 92 million OLED panels in 2017, indicating that Apple expects this new iPhone to be a top-seller. Earlier reports indicated that Samsung would be making around 70 panels for Apple this year but it seems the order was increased.

Apple currently ships around 200 million iPhones per year, so a good chunk of those will be sporting OLED displays this year.

KitGuru Says: There have been so many iPhone rumours over the last few months that it can be hard to keep up. One thing is for sure though, Apple is planning something fairly big this time around, which should hopefully make up for the underwhelming iPhone 7 reveal.
