The last remaining Half-Life series writer has left Valve

Back at the start of 2016, Marc Laidlaw, the lead writer on Half-Life and Half-Life 2 departed from Valve. It was a shock at the time but the writers behind Half-Life 2 Episode One and Episode Two remained. Now this year, those writers have also left, meaning there are no more Half-Life 1/2 writers left at Valve.

Back in February of this year, Erik Wolpaw left Valve and now a few short months later, Chet Faliszek has also confirmed his departure. These two helped co-write the Half-Life 2 episodes.

Aside from Half-Life though, Faliszek and Wolpaw both wrote Portal as well as the overarching story in Left 4 Dead. Faliszek also went on to become a key part of Valve's virtual reality plans over the last few years.

Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Faliszek explained that his split from Valve was amicable, there isn't any ‘drama' going on behind the scenes, he just wanted a change of pace, which is understandable after the many years he has remained at Valve.

Still, the fact remains that Valve has lost three notable writers in the last year and a half and if the company is going to return to story-driven games, it is going to need to usher in some replacements.

KitGuru Says: This doesn't necessarily mean anything in regards to Valve's future, though it is a shame to see the last Half-Life writer leave the company. Either way though, it will be interesting to see what some fresh writers could bring to Valve's games in the future.

  9. Wait a minute it took more than one person to write that story? It’s a linear story with no side quests, it’s not exactly the Witcher is it! Guy shouldn’t have left he should have been sacked ; )
