After a very lengthy marketing period, the much anticipated Tekken 8 is finally out in the world for all to enjoy. It seems as though the game has found a strong audience straight from the get-go, as physical sales of the game in the UK have more than doubled that of its closest competition: Street Fighter 6.
Following the game’s initial launch period which began on the 25th of January, it seems as though Tekken 8 has managed to surpass expectations, with Gamesindustry.biz’ Christopher Dring taking to Twitter to say:
“Last year I was surprised at how low Street Fighter 6’s UK sales were at physical retail (it did fine digitally). I wondered if it was a genre trend, but Tekken 8’s UK physical sales are good, and more than double the launch of SF6. So… who knows? Maybe it was the competition.”
As mentioned by Dring, Street Fighter 6 sold well even at launch, but the game’s retail presence seems to have left quite a bit to be desired. It is therefore interesting to see just how much more successful Tekken 8 has been at retail – especially since the game was delayed out of 2023 in order to not clash with Street Fighter 6. It seems as though the decision to internally delay the game to a more quiet period has worked.
With Tekken 7 selling over 10 million copies, it will be interesting to see just how many units Bandai Namco are able to push with its successor in just one year.
