It looks like things are still going strong over at Sony's PlayStation division as the PS4 had its best year yet, with 20 million consoles shipped between April 1st 2016 and March 31st 2017. In all, the Sony ‘gaming' division (consoles, software, online services) managed to increase sales by more than six percent and profit by more than 50 percent.
As of December 2016, Sony has sold over 50 million PS4 consoles and shipped 60 million to retailers. We don't know specific numbers for the PS4 Pro or PlayStation VR headset but both launches seem to have gone down well.
As has been the case for a couple of years now, Sony's gaming division has been the highest performing in the whole company. Revenue rose to $14.7 billion while $1.21 billion of that was profit.
However, while this may have been the PS4's best year yet, Sony is expecting things to slow down a bit during the next financial year. Right now, the company expects to ship 18 million consoles, indicating that sales may have already peaked. Still, given that the PS4 is more than four years old at this point, that may not be too surprising. That said, the PS4 does still seem to be outpacing the PS2, which is a big achievement.
KitGuru Says: The PS4 is still outpacing the PS2, so I don't think sales are going to be an issue going forward, even if overall shipments start to slow down a bit. Have many of you picked up a PS4 in the last year?
It’s only this year that I’ve seen interesting games coming out; mostly I’ve been using it for Netflix/Bluray. Surprised it’s still so insanely popular (but maybe that’s just me).
It’s definitely not coming from the PS4 pro then, I don’t know a single ps4 owner who upgraded and general consensus is that it’s big, noisy and offers very few benefits over the PS4. On top of that the reason they don’t give VR headset numbers is because they only sold to review sites and Youtubers who used them once or twice and never used them again.
Microsoft just announced really good numbers too up 13% in active Xbox live users though if I’m honest I only use mine for Netflix, Blu-ray and the occasional game of Forza.

It is a little over 3 years old not “over 4”. It won’t turn 4 until November this year. In fact in Japan that won’t be true until February next year.
