Square Enix is willing to let Hitman rights go when it sells IO Interactive

It has been several weeks since Square Enix first made the surprise announcement that it would be dropping Hitman developer IO Interactive from its roster. This impromptu decision has meant that IO Interactive needs to secure new investors so that it can continue to develop, though it also threw the future of the Hitman franchise in doubt. Fortunately, it seems that Square Enix is willing to let the rights to Hitman go.

This particular piece of news comes from the latest financial documents from Square Enix, confirming what the publisher is willing to sell the rights to Hitman alongside IO Interactive so that the studio can continue to work on its most prestigious franchise.

Here is what Square Enix president, Yosuke Matsuda had to say in the financial brief: “Because the firm is engaged in the development of Hitman and other renowned titles, we are negotiating with prospective external investors capable of ensuring that these titles carry on”.

So far, we've had very few updates on the state of IO Interactive, though the studio did speak out last week to announce a round of job cuts to keep things afloat. There is currently no word on potential suitors for IO Interactive.

KitGuru Says: I would assume that some publishers out there have already shown interest in IO Interactive but so far, the rumour mill has been pretty quiet on that front. Who do you think should acquire IO and keep Hitman alive?
