AMD will build another round of Zen CPUs on 14nm+ before jumping to ‘Zen 2’ and 7nm

This evening, AMD held a conference call to follow up and provide additional clarification to some of the announcements it made during the Financial Analyst meeting on Tuesday this week. During that event, AMD unveiled the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition, alongside its forthcoming Threadripper and EPYC processors. However, GPU and CPU roadmaps were also updated, with AMD showing plans for Zen 2 and Zen 3 architecture. Before we get to future generations of Zen though, there will be an incremental update to the 14nm Ryzen CPUs currently on the market.

During the follow-up call this afternoon, AMD confirmed that it would be building another generation of Ryzen processors. However, next time around, they will be based on refined '14nm+' technology, likely paving the way for efficiency improvements and perhaps better clock speeds.

After that ‘incremental' update, AMD will begin focussing on ‘Zen 2', which is confirmed to be built on the 7nm process at Globalfoundries. Current estimates point to a 2019 date for 7nm. This will then later be followed up by ‘Zen 3', so AMD is set on the CPU front for the next several years.

In the meantime, the current iteration of Zen still has plenty of room to grow. We have Ryzen 7 and 5 already but later this year, the lineup will expand with Ryzen 3, Threadripper 16-core CPUs for HEDT systems and the 32-core EPYC SoC for data centres.

KitGuru Says: After being stuck with the FX-series for so long, it is nice to see that AMD has a healthy roadmap planned for future CPU launches over the next several years. Hopefully Zen will continue to remain competitive during that time. Have any of you made the jump to a Ryzen processor already? Are you holding out for future iterations?Β

  1. So yea hopefully this 14nm+ will breath some more life into the Ryzen CPU’s. Also hopefully tweak a few of the short comings of the CPU as well now that AMD knows where to look and what to do to fix some minor issues. Oh and of coarse getting a clock speed boost would be a good idea also even if only to 4.2ghz and a OC of 4.4-4.5Ghz would make these Ryzens look a lot better when compared to Intel’s selection. All people see these days is those FPS in the games and that Ghz rating on the OC’d parts nothing else matters to them.

  2. You are right. It’s a shame really. Ryzen is a great all around architecture. When I saw Zen 2 roadmap it stated 2018 on a another site. And that Is what I’m aiming at. Would not mind 2019 either but sooner is better.

  3. I’am freelancing using the net, completing basic tasks that just needs from you personal computer or laptop and additionally internet accessibility and so I couldn’t be happier… 6 months have crossed since i started out this and also i received until now in total 36 thousand dollars… Basically i make profit around $80/hour and work for 3 to 4 h each day.And excellent thing about this job opportunity is that you are able to make a decision when to work by yourself as well as for how long and you receive income by the end of every week.>>>> HELLSGAM.IN/25

  4. What I find interesting is that in several benchmarks and even games, even on stock clocks, Ryzen is getting comparable, same or even better results than Intel.

in order to get more out of it, developers need to optimize their software for Ryzen… and if they do that properly, even the existing Ryzen can easily overtake Intel at clock for clock (as it’s mainly comparable/same in IPC to 7700k at same clocks even).

  5. i’m still gaming at 1080p, so no Ryzen for me.

  6. All GAMERS see these days is those FPS in the games and that Ghz rating on the OC’d parts nothing else matters to them.

  7. Sadly true, but I’d change it to “overclocking enthusiasts that happen to game” because a true gamer is all about the game, which means they don’t put as much emphasis on being knowledgeable about hardware, overclocking, DIY, etc.

  8. Your loss in that case.
You don’t really lose that much at 1080p with Ryzen. The differences are negligible as gaming is still fluid with more than enough FPS.
You also need to take into account the fact that 1080p performance will further improve over time, and you can also use Ryzen for a lot more tha just gaming.

  9. I’m not paying for lower performance, and i don’t need Ryzen for a lot more than just gaming.

  10. overclocking is incredibly easy….

  11. Gonna hold out for Zen 2 even though my fx 8320 is clearly holding me back at this point.

  12. late, but idc… the people who only care about fps in games and overclocking ability are the people who need those things. Not everyone wants to pay $400+ for a CPU when all they want to do is browse the web and play games. I have a 144hz monitor, so I’m not going to buy a cpu that’s going to make my $500 monitor useless when my 4690k at 4.9 Ghz already does the job perfectly. I had an 1800x and motherboard pre-ordered, but I didn’t get the first shipment, so I canceled and just decided to wait to see what ryzen 2 looks like. If they can gain 10% IPC while allowing me to overclock to 4.6-5ghz, then I’m definitely making the swap to a 6 core ryzen, but if not, I’m going to go with w/e i7 is out at the time of ryzen 2 launch.

  13. Yea I am shooting for a 2018 upgrade for my system as well. It will either be a Ryzen on the refined 14nm or a Ryzen 2 which ever is ready when I do the upgrade. I would prefer Ryzen 2 it should have a bit better IPC and probably have faster stock clocks.

  14. Yea my Sandy Bridge i7 2700K @5.1Ghz CPU is still going strong so I can wait for the second gen or even the refined Ryzens. So I figure a mid 2018 upgrade for my own system. I just hope my system holds together until then since the CPU has been running at this increased speed for a long time now and at some point something has to give out. Then again if the heat in the system is kept under control like it has been it should be fine I guess.

  15. Since Ryzen came to market I’m saying that Zen architecture will stretch its legs on 7nm process. I would not mind Zen either but for now there is no need for me, so, Zen 2 will be most probable buy for me. Something like 1600x at 7nm with RX480/580 succesor at same process would serve me well

  16. Cool, then we will be waiting for 50ghz cpus

  17. As long as you’re not overvolting it much you’re probably fine

  18. If ryzen 2 doesn’t come out until 2019, I doubt you’ll be fine with a 10% increase in IPC.

  19. I can’t wait for Zen+, I need it now!!
Hope it will have way more IPCs and a freaking decent ”default clock speed” of 4.5Ghz, and 5Ghz boost, because it needs a lot of single core horse power… That will rule in my book(s)! <3

  20. LoL, that’s my CPU… But the fcker not only is holding me back, but it freezes my system at around 45Β°….. :((((((((( Don’t know why. I changed its thermal paste too, and the case has good ventilation. The CPU cooler is the Noctua NH-D15….. WTF?! :((((

I just need the Zen+ to complete my new system. Hope it won’t disappoint though…
Can’t wait more than a year for Zen 2! πŸ™

  21. Me too. But I’m willing to upgrade this as well.

  22. Can’t wait more than a year for Zen 2! Too long… :((
Hope Zen+ won’t disappoint, ’cause I’m waiting fot it.

  23. It shouldn’t be freezing u at 45c. Under gaming load I hit 55c with a Corsair h80i. Prime 95 I hit a peak of 71c but it levels out to 62c which isn’t great but it’s also worst case scenario. You may need a better psu as it sounds like that might be what’s causing your system to crash.

  24. I already ordered a new PSU. But the existing one is a Thermaltake 630W, It shouldn’t have any issues… 😐

  25. I don’t think it will disappoint but one have to have in mind the fact that those chips are still first gen Zen but will small improvements

  26. Well, if we’re taking it technically, it will need years to get perfect, like Intel had. πŸ™

  27. True that. But Intel finally has decent competition

  28. We shouldn’t, unless you are working, and you need to save time making your cpu faster

  29. It shouldn’t matter, when you already have the fastest CPU on market! That’s where I’m getting at.

  30. You will still save time overclocking the fastest CPU on the market πŸ˜‰

  31. If it’s the best fcking thing on market, I don’t care about overclocking. Period!
If you’re just an overclocking fanatic, good for you, I don’t care!

  32. A profesional isnt an overclocking fanatic, is just looking to save time, time = money, you are so mind closed. We (humanity) need overclocking, you dont, just you, period.

  33. Period my foot! Are you on your period or something? I said it first!

You don’t get it at all… I said (and take it literally), if it’s the fastest ever, why still overclock it? If it gets the job done in 10 seconds or less, why do you need to overclock it??

That makes you a fanatic! For you, nothing but overclocking matters. Don’t you see? It’s the definition of fanatic, you need help. But not with overclocking… πŸ™

  34. You really ignorant, 10 seconds?, overclocking 10% can save you HOURS of work, grow kid, learn, open your fucking mind.

And no, I’m not overclocking my things because I’m not doing profesional work.

Talking about things you dont know…, please stop, we dont care if you are an ignorant. What you believe or feel, isn’t the true for everyone, just for you!

  35. The last part goes for you too!

And it’s because I know, that I am talking about this. You literally said you don’t do any professional work, yet you bullshit about it like a pro…

You know, there’s a fine line and difference between talking about it, and actually doing it.

PS: I am not a kid.
