Long-rumoured Twisted Metal game reportedly cancelled

As part of a multi-media franchise revival, Sony had been pushing to see the return of the classic PlayStation destruction derby series Twisted Metal. Last year’s Peacock-distributed live-action adaptation was well-received, with a 2nd season confirmed to be on its way. Unfortunately, it seems as though the long-in-development Twisted Metal video game has now been cancelled.

As reported by Jason Schreier via Bloomberg, as part of the recently-announced Sony lay-offs, the long-rumoured Twisted Metal video game has been cancelled; claiming that “Despite some recent scuttlebutt suggesting that Twisted Metal was close to release, the game was in early development and wasn't yet greenlit.”

For the uninitiated, back in September 2021 it was reported that the Liverpool-based Lucid Studio was working on a revival of the Twisted Metal franchise – having previously released the similarly-styled Destruction All-stars.

Cut to January 2022 and Lucid Games were said to have been taken off the project, with Firesprite now being tasked with its creation. Unfortunately, it would appear as though they too are no longer working on Twisted Metal.

What this means for the future of the franchise is unknown. As mentioned, the live-action adaptation was surprisingly well received, with a 2nd season announced late last year. We speculated at the time that the premiere of the second season could line up with the release of this Twisted Metal title. Evidently this is no longer the case – begging the question as to whether Twisted Metal will ever return in game form.
