The first Ryzen-powered gaming laptop is up for pre-order

Ryzen has been a huge success for AMD and while these processors are already well-established in the desktop space, we are still waiting on laptop versions. Fortunately, it doesn't look like we'll be kept waiting much longer, as the first Ryzen-powered gaming laptop has gone up for pre-order at UK retail. It's an ASUS ROG laptop, featuring a Ryzen 1700 and an AMD GPU.

The ROG Strix GL702CZ is a laptop we previously saw teased in the build-up to Computex. It features the traditional ROG gaming laptop design, with a 17.3-inch full HD display, a Ryzen 7 1700 CPU and an AMD RX 580 4GB graphics chip. The display also supports FreeSync, so you should get a smooth, tear-free gaming experience.

Here are the specs and features:

  • Ryzen 1700 8C/16T CPU (3.0GHz base/3.7GHz boost).
  • 16GB DDR4 2400MHz RAM.
  • AMD RX 580 4GB GPU.
  • 256GB M.2 SSD.
  • 1TB HDD.
  • 17.3-inch 1080p 60Hz display with FreeSync.
  • Windows 10 Home.
  • Two Year Warranty.

The RX 580 in this case managed to score 13,846 points in 3D Mark 11 P-score, which edges out the GTX 1060's score of 11,500. On top of that, the folks over at Overclockers UK have benchmark results for the Ryzen 7 1700 too, which scored 1410 points in the Cinebench multi-core test, edging out Intel's Core i7 7700HQ, which scored 737 points.

The ASUS ROG GL702ZC-GC104T gaming laptop is up for pre-order now at OCUK. These laptops are expected to begin shipping sometime in Q3.

KitGuru Says: Ryzen has been nothing short of a success on desktop at this point, so it will be interesting to see AMD take the fight to the laptop space too this year. Are any of you in the market for a gaming laptop? Would you consider going with an all-AMD rig like this one?

  1. Ryzen 5 model also available for pre-order. It comes with Ryzen 5 1600 processor and 8GB RAM instead of Ryzen 7 1700 and 16GB RAM at low price.

  2. A portable render machine? Someone’s in love

  3. 100% faster is ‘edging out’?

  4. Was just going to post this. The score is literally 91% higher. Edging out is an understatement!

  5. Excellent. The 1600 is probably my favorite of the bunch.

  6. Lmao I was gonna say the same.

  7. I grabbed one for myself

  8. That’s a cool gaming laptop I thought as I the saw Cinebench score…….then I saw RX580 4gb. So now for around £1600 you can have a 17″ gaming laptop with a really strong processor i.e this one and mediocre graphics or mediocre processor and a GTX1070. I’m moving house as soon as my property sells and I’ll probably be relying on a laptop and it drives me nuts?

  9. I need a new mobile workstation. The 1700 version is very good for 1800€.

The other way is to buy a portable industrial computer chassis with a 17″ screen that costs 1800 € just the chassis and give another 1500€ to stick inside desktop hardware ( if thread ripper will be available with a mATX board is a better deal for the power user) the bonus is that it will be easier upgradable and portable in 420x325x180mm size with the keyboard folded.

  10. This laptop with the 8 core club is better for content creators (video editing, 3d rendering etc).

For gamers is so and so with that GPU.

  11. Yup I know but it’s a ROG – Republic of Gamers so it’s aimed at gamers, I know its not a weak GPU and it’s perfectly adequate for 99% of games I was just pointing out at this price point I can never seem to find the holy grail that makes me want to rush out and buy one.

  17. But the LCD is 1080p… That means CPU bound…

  18. It will be also a version with higher resolution screen.

  19. Looks so good, and priced really well vs i7-7700HQ machines. Really want that Ryzen 1600 version… but holy shart, that weight!!! 3.20kg. WTF?!

Could they not make a 15.6 inch version that’s more portable?

  20. I wish this was my software development machine. Using dual-core intel for that purpose is rather lame. This would easily beat the quad-core intel offerings. Any workstation workload, it can handle it … I wouldn’t mind having a RX 550 in it, for that purpose, and worse display.

  21. Im disappointed they opted for the 4GB version of the RX 480, seriously limits its future proofing 🙁

  22. the price has not yet been confirmed by asus…then how did overclockers made it???

  23. Welcome to the Intel monopoly 🙂
Where almost everyone is bought out.

  24. Mot at 1080p it does not. A laptop with a 1080 and 8gig is less future proof using a INtel HQ processor.

  25. perhaps that is true that the laptop with the HQ processor from intel is less future proof (unless its one of the unlocked HK variants), But 4GB of Vram is also limiting for gaming future proof, theres already games at 1080p that can exceed 4GB of Video Ram. GTA V and Titanfall as a couple of examples.

  26. Of course I am not buying anything but Pure Ryzen AMD mobile
with all 16GB of Ram dual channel and best cpu and Graphics available…

  27. The model in the preorder is 60Hz… Why. Why even do this, Asus? 1080p60 on such powerful internals…
