Palmer Luckey makes the jump from VR industry to surveillance technology

It hasn't been long since Palmer Luckey officially left Oculus but it looks like he has been keeping himself busy since then. Rather than trying to jump back into the virtual reality industry though, Luckey has opted to form a brand new startup company, which will be working on surveillance technology.

The new company is working on cameras and sensors similar to those found in self-driving cars to detect potential hazards or threats. However, rather than road accidents, these cameras will be watching out for criminal activity. In a statement given to The New York Times, Luckey confirmed that he is working on a new defense-oriented startup: “We are spending more than ever on defence technology, yet the pace of innovation has been slowing for decades. We need a new kind of defence company, one that will save taxpayer dollars while creating superior technology to keep our troops and citizens safer”.

Beyond that, not much is known about Luckey's new startup company at this time, we don't even know its official name. Still, it is interesting to see what he is up to after parting ways with Oculus VR, which he founded and sold to Facebook for $2 billion.

KitGuru Says: Jumping from being the face of virtual reality to quietly developing defence technology is quite the change. Still, with Luckey now back in the public eye and actively using social media, I doubt this will be the last we hear from him.
