Over the last few months, we have been hearing more and more details surround Microsoft's work with Qualcomm to bring Windows 10 to ARM CPUs. This all came to a head this month when it was announced that PCs running Windows 10 and the Snapdragon 835 SoC would be released this year. Now, it seems Intel is keeping an eye out, as it becomes increasingly worried about x86 emulators infringing on its own patents.
Intel launched the first x86 processor 40 years ago, an anniversary that was celebrated in a recent company blog post. However, the blog also contained a strong warning against those looking to emulate x86 on other processors. The timing here tells us quite a bit, as this warning came almost immediately after Microsoft, Qualcomm and several OEMs announced plans for Windows 10 devices running on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 ARM processor.
Intel did not name any companies specifically, but it did send a reminder to companies trying to emulate x86 that it would enforce its patents, as it has done in the past. Intel currently has 1,600 patents relating to its dynamic x86 ISA and makes an effort to not widely license others to use them.
“Intel carefully protects its x86 innovations, and we do not widely license others to use them. Over the past 30 years, Intel has vigilantly enforced its intellectual property rights against infringement by third-party microprocessors”, the post reads. Intel then goes on to add that “there have been reports that some companies may try to emulate Intel's proprietary x86 ISA without Intel's authorization”. The company then promptly points out that the last company to do this was Transmeta, with resulted in a rather large legal dispute.
This reminder is a clear warning against x86 emulation but with all that aside, Intel still says it “welcomes lawful competition” and “fully expects” companies to keep Intel's IP in mind in the future.
KitGuru Says: While there is no patent war just yet, Intel is clearly ready to make some moves should Microsoft/Qualcomm begin emulating x86 to get Windows running properly on Snapdragon SoCs. It will be interesting to see how this situation evolves over the next few months.Β
Intel can go f*** itself at this point. They have become greedy c***s that want a monopoly so they can keep lining their pockets while they bend us consumers over and f*** us in the a** with their prices.
Intel has every right to protect their copyrights…. I just also feel they better be very careful, because patents have busted down on the whole “can’t patent ideas” mindset, and it could backfire really REALLY badly for them.
Seriously if M$ has found a way to do x86 without Intel’s architecture, but Intel feels they are being breached as a result, they could and might actually lose. If M$ did infact copy it (as seen with Zenimax and Oculus) even 1 line of code is enough to win the case…..
ah, more intel patent trolling. guess its more profitable then releasing superior products at a reasonable price.
lol you picked a hell of a day to come out of that coma, it’s OK don’t worry that’s all behind us….we have competition now. Use Google and look up Ryzen and Thread Ripper. You don’t have to give Intel a penny unless you chose to.
I had some conversations with two people who were trying to build a new PC. I suppose both of them has the cash to go for a high end gaming PC but neither wants Ryzen because it doesn’t compete well with higher end Intel CPU’s
umm…..well, what MS & QUALCOMM are using is a completely software based emulation.
But you do regardless, just not as much. AMD leases an x86 license from Intel.
That’s simply not true, Ryzen performs absolutely fine in gaming PC’s. Sure it had a few teething problems but what new platform doesn’t. The trouble is people only refer to the launch reviews and not the revisits of which there are few. Something else to note is that some of the ‘gaming’ processors from Intel are operating at 90% load while the Ryzen with its core count has plenty of room for Streaming etc which a lot of gamers seem to want to do these days (don’t ask I don’t get it either lol). Sites such a Kitguru praised the Ryzen very highly so it’s going to take guys like you to spread the word to your friends.
Intel don’t even give a reach-around. Cunts π
Just a thought.. What if Microsoft stops windows from recognising Intel processors… Puff… Mind blown… π
