Microsoft is bringing back Age of Empires with an all new Definitive Edition

Last night during the E3 PC Game Show, Microsoft made a surprise appearance to announce the return of Age of Empires. This year, Microsoft is launching an Age of Empires remaster to celebrate the game's 20th anniversary, complete with ‘4K visuals' and redesigned sprites, some gameplay updates and even a re-recorded soundtrack.

Age of Empires Definitive Edition has a new trailer to show off the new look and some of the new features. Beyond that, there will be a beta available within the next few months. Here is the trailer:

Here's the official description: “20 years after its launch, Microsoft is proud to announce the Definitive Edition of the original Age of Empires. Fully remastered with 4k graphics, re-orchestrated soundtrack, major gameplay improvements, new narrative, Xbox Live multiplayer and achievements, the Definitive Edition brings back the classic game and its Rise of Rome expansion.”

Microsoft has been keeping Age of Empires on life support for a few years now. Most notably, new expansions have been released for Age of Empires II HD. Perhaps after this remaster, Microsoft will think about going all-in with a new sequel entry to the series.

KitGuru Says: Age of Empires is the game that made me fall in love with RTS. I have many fond memories playing the original on my first PC, so I'm happy to see the game come back. Are any of you fans of the Age of Empires series?

  1. I loved AoE back then, but I find the way too slow nowadays and I don’t modern gamers feel differently. Rise of Nations set the new bar, and AoE doesn’t match up as far as I’m concerned.
