Since the launch of Overwatch, Blizzard has taken a hard stance against cheats and while some have managed to find holes in Blizzard's anti-cheat system, they don't tend to last for long. This week, some players discovered that the hard way, with an update this week making paid aimbots less effective.
Recently Blizzard launched the new Horizon Lunar Colony map for Overwatch. However, that update also made a small change to how the game uses colour. Some paid Overwatch aimbots lock on to targets by seeking out specific colours and by making this small imperceivable change, cheaters are going to have a much harder time than usual.
The news first broke on Korean Overwatch forums and eventually made its way to the Overwatch subreddit. In the post, it was explained exactly how these aimbots work:
“Image recognition based aimbots, prevalent in Korea, work by targeting specific RGB value used for enemy outlines. Basically starting from this patch, the outlines on enemies slightly change in color (unnoticeable to human eyes) so that the image recognition engine on aimbots would be either completely useless or have high failure rate.”.
The Gibraltar map in particular is causing problems for aimbot users due to the use of red backgrounds. Blizzard hasn't said anything itself about this year but PCGamer is waiting to hear back on that front.
KitGuru Says: I've had my share of issues with cheaters on shooters but I don't think I've ever come across one in Overwatch. Smart updates like this are probably a huge reason why that's the case. Have any of you ever seen a cheater in Overwatch?
I say if you play online and have to cheat you pretty much suck at whatever game you are trying to cheat at. I don’t play online games very much and when I do I don’t believe it to be fair to cheat which is probably why I am not always the best player but that is ok with me I am there to have fun not become a legend in the game.
Now I do mostly play single player based games and sometimes if I get stuck I will use a trainer to get past something but even then it is a last ditch effort last resort kind of thing. I always play the games in the hardest mode that the game has so sometimes things can get pretty hairy. I just find it a lot more fun & challenging to play that way in most of the games but yes sometimes you have to admit defeat and use the trainer lol. Single player only had to stress that never online that is peer crap move.
i hacked on mw3, i was extremely bored of the game and decided to see how long i could go…i most certainly am not bad at the game. i wouldnt even use it unless the other team had a hacker so i wasnt ruining regular games (hackers in that game were more common than korean gm in overwatch)
I’m proper old school, when I get stuck in a single player game………..I buy a new game?, then I feel guilty and buy my wife a gift. I have 250 games and my wife has a lot of shoes, dresses and perfumes. I am not a good gamer lol.
I do play online including Rocket League, Dota, StarCraft and Overwatch and yes I’m pretty god damned awful but my friends are pretty forgiving and carry me. It never occurred to me that people cheated on Overwatch, I thought Battle.net was pretty shit hot. Anyone who is caught cheating should have their account instantly locked, single and multiplayer.
