Like Destiny, Bioware’s Anthem will be the start of a 10-year journey

Prior to the announcement of Anthem, various leaks and rumours pitched the new IP as Bioware's take on Destiny. Now, it seems the similarities between the two games is spreading further, with EA stating that the game is ‘the start of a 10-year journey' echoing the way Activision first pitched Destiny.

Speaking on the Xbox Daily Show at E3 this year, EA's VP Patrick Soderlund talked about how at its core Anthem “is a social game” where you group up with friends and embark on quests. He then went on to explain that the game has been in development for four years already and it has all been with long-term plans in mind: “once we launch next year – it will be the start of maybe a 10-year journey for us”.

Anthem was the closing game of Microsoft's E3 conference this year and judging by the gameplay reveal, the game is fairly similar to Destiny in terms of gameplay. You receive a quest, you get your group together, you take out some enemies and at the end, you are rewarded with better gear.

Whether or not Anthem will follow Destiny's expansion/sequel business model remains to be seen. Either way though, it seems clear that EA is hoping to keep this franchise around for the long haul.

KitGuru Says: Anthem isn't coming out until later next year but as a fan of Destiny, I am very excited to see what it brings to the table. I must admit, the world Bioware showed in its gameplay demo looked more interesting than most of the maps in Destiny. If they can flesh that out with a compelling story and lore, then this could end up being a very good game.

  1. I really want to see how these games with “10 year” plans deal with Star Citizen when it is (finally) released.

  2. ah, is this the game they were claiming would be the ‘bob dylan of video games’? i’m not really sure what that means, but it sounds impressive!!! (said the marketing department…).

  3. SC 10 year plan isn’t the pre-release schedule?

  4. It looks alright but their use of Ubisofts cringy-actors-chatting-bollocks has murdered the game.

Also let’s not forget that this is being published by EA. I entirely expect this game to be flooded and ruined with microtransactions at least some point in the future

  5. Aaaand another Destiny… OK, Bioware, I hope you don’t fuck this up.

  6. Star Citizen doesn’t have a 10 year plan, it’s just in a HEALTHY alpha right now and all its schedules are about the new patches. However if Anthem will be a “10-year plan” then I look at Destiny and run, cuz these kinds of plans fuck the games up with updates that the community doesn’t necessarily want, and when that happens, the next update most likely going to ask for $$$ since they are loosing people. At that point, it’s time to leave.
