BioWare restructure: Aaryn Flynn is leaving, paving the way for Casey Hudson’s return

BioWare is experiencing a bit of a change up with one general manager stepping down, making way for another. A couple of blog posts released onto the studio’s website revealed current general manager Aaryn Flynn’s plans to leave the studio. Meanwhile, Casey Hudson will be returning to take over as GM.

Hudson left BioWare three years ago to join Microsoft in developing mixed reality projects for its HoloLens. Known for helping create multiple hits for BioWare, including Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, he will be stepping into the role of general manager to replace Flynn, who has served in the company for 17 years.

“I needed some time off, needed a bit of change, and wanted to get involved in the new wave of disruptive technologies that were emerging,” Hudson said in his post. “The last few years have been transformative for me, from having time to reflect on what I most want to do, to working with new technologies at platform scale. And now, I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to return to lead BioWare — a studio that I think of as home.”

Flynn was a little more cryptic as to his reasons for leaving, stating “I have been contemplating changes in my own life for some time, but when I heard that Casey had confirmed he was up for the task, I realized the opportunities before us,” Flynn said in his post. “I will be working with him over the next couple of weeks to help catch him up and do my part to set him up for success to be the best GM he can be.”

BioWare is used to welcoming back old-hands who have served them in the past, with Drew Karpyshyn returning in 2015 after a three-year departure. Also known for his work on KOTOR and Mass Effect, he is now working on BioWare’s new IP, Anthem, which Hudson was also working on before his departure. Anthem is set to release on PS4, Xbox One and PC later in 2018.

KitGuru Says: Fans are likely to be pleased that the visionaries behind BioWare’s most successful games are returning. What do you think about the change up? Does this make you more excited for Anthem?

Bioware is just a shadow of it’s former self. Everything the big publishers touch, turn to ashes.
