Radeon Vega Frontier Edition vs Titan Xp performance detailed

While the enthusiast gaming audience will need to wait a little longer to get their hands on the RX Vega, we will be getting our first taste of AMD's latest GPU architecture quite soon. The Radeon Vega Frontier Edition is supposed to start shipping next week and while it isn't necessarily a gaming card, it can run games. This week, AMD lifted the curtain a bit, allowing the world's first Vega Frontier Edition performance details to be published.

The folks over at PCWorld managed to get their hands on an exclusive preview of the Vega Frontier Edition, putting it directly against an Nvidia Titan Xp. The preview mainly focusses on synthetic benchmarks like Cinebench. However, some gaming performance details were also discussed.

In Cinebench, Vega FE was around 14 percent faster than the Titan Xp, meanwhile it was 28 percent faster in Catia and Creo. The biggest lead came when running the SolidWorks benchmark, in which the Vega FE was 50 percent faster than the Titan Xp. Unfortunately, we didn't get results for more widely known benchmarks like Firestrike or Heaven.

AMD did not want to reveal specific numbers when it came to gaming performance but according to the report, Vega FE was tested against a Titan Xp in Doom (Vulkan), Prey (DX11) and Sniper Elite 4 (DX12). All of the games ran at the highest settings on an Acer 3440×1440 monitor. Apparently, Vega FE should sit somewhere between the GTX 1080 and GTX 1080Ti performance-wise in gaming.

No hard numbers were released from the gaming tests but it is interesting to see the first impressions of someone who has actively used the card. With the first shipments set to go out next week, it shouldn't take long for proper game benchmarks to start showing up.

KitGuru Says: The Vega FE might not be the gaming-oriented GPU in AMD's new stack but it should give us a decent enough impression of what to expect when the RX Vega does eventually arrive. Are any of you still waiting for the RX Vega to launch?  What level of performance are you expecting from it?

My expectation for RX Vega: To be able to run any game on the market today at 60+ fps on ultra settings at 1440p. Reality: Just being able to get my hands on the bloody thing before a miner nabs it.

  2. Sounds about right.

  3. i dont know now. its kind of risky. miners didnt touch 1080ti for a reason. its pretty expensive. imo mining is getting tough with new miners joining. if its still being oos then its some rich kids on youtube showing off his mining rigs. which hurt both crowds.

  4. It would be pretty bad if it didn’t beat the 1080. The titan is still winner in games. Titan also has more compute I believe, once you factor in the massive boost potential, but somehow lose in synthetic benchmark…I’m intrigued.

Nope. Vega has the higher compute, I think TPU posted a few benches.

  6. they benchmarked a work station card vs a strip down workstation card aimed at gaming.. GG

They should have compared it to the top line Nvidia Workstation card Quadro p6000 ..

  7. Idk, I don’t think Vega FE is going to have much boost beyond 12-13 teraflops. Nvidia is being conservative when they say 12 teraflops, that’s only the base boost at 1582mhz. (Comparing fp32) They can easily boost to ~1750mhz without tweaking (gpu boost 3.0), which puts it at ~13.5 teraflops and can be oc’d to 2000+ mhz, outputting ~15 teraflops.

  8. i have odered 30 to mine with lol

  9. how much is it?

  10. $1200 FE version, water cooling one cost more. No clue how much the gaming edition will cost.

Took me a while to find this again, here ya go.
https://www.techpowerup. com/234662/vega-frontier-ed-beats-titan-xp-in-compute-formidable-game-performance-preview (just remove the space before com, disqus sometimes doesn’t like links). In any case, beats it by quite a bit. Talking about Titan Xpeepee now.

  13. Ok I see my mistake, what I meant by “compute” in my original comment was supposed to be “raw power” in flops. Thanks for the link though.

Np. The thing is, in raw numbers, Xpeepee might be better, but in terms of performance, Vega seems to take the 1st place. And that’s fucking great.

The air cooled version is $999 and the water cooled version is $1499 The Nvidia Quadro P6000 is almost $4000 by itself. That is why it is compared to the Titan XP.

  16. how ever the p6000 is a workstation card, technically speaking the titian XP isn’t
from the info the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition is also a workstation card not a GFX gaming card…., at least that’s the impression there giving..

u don’t compare a GFX card vs a work station card..

  17. the $800 P4000 slaughters the Vega FE in the benches they tested. hell, even the $440 P2000 beats it in some. for the price of a watercooled Vega FE, you can get a P4000 AND a GTX 1080 Ti.

  18. Vaiting for Wega.

Vega is a Prosumer card just like the Titan XP but is more focused on the business side. Aircooled Vega or water cooled Vega may not be the fastest card, but for the price and it’s A.I. and machine learning capabilities it is definitely a lower cost option compared to the higher end P6000 which is $4,600.
