Netflix in talks to keep Marvel and Lucasfilm after Disney launches its own service

Earlier this week, we learned that Disney would be launching its very own movie streaming service in 2019, leaving its current deal with Netflix behind. This would mean that from 2019, no new Disney movies would appear on Netflix and older titles would eventually be removed for good. At the time, it was assumed that Marvel and Lucasfilm movies would also be kept off of Netflix going forward but that may not end up being the case.

Today, Netflix Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos, had a quick conversation with Reuters, explaining that Netflix is “in active discussions” with Disney over securing the rights to Marvel and Lucasfilm content after its current deal runs out in 2019.

At the time of writing, a Disney spokesperson has not commented on this news but Netflix’s Sarandos believes that Disney’s own service could be “complementary” to Netflix. As you might imagine, Disney’s plan to launch its own streaming service is something that the company anticipated ahead of time.

The fact that huge media companies could just make their own services for their own content is also a reason why Netflix has been investing so heavily in original shows and movies.

KitGuru Says: As a big Marvel fan myself, I do hope that Disney chooses to keep its superhero films on Netflix. It would make good sense too, given that Netflix is producing some impressive Marvel TV Shows, which are semi-connected to the movie universe cannon.

  1. i’m not sure how disney thinks they’ll be able to support a streaming service with their content, i guess they’d have to set up deals like netflix has to stream other movies/shows? i mean even with star wars and marvel, who’s going to subscribe to disney streaming? its too narrow a selection.

  2. Sh!! i forgot that Marvel movies were a product of Disney’s.

  3. Depends on the price. Disney has a lot of kids shows, so I think a lot of parents with (young) children would be more than happy.

  4. If Disney put their entire classic catalog available in 4k and produce original content on there as well then i’d sub.

eh so, they gonna make more money with their own service and fanbase than they could make for licensing in many services with a larger fanbase?
