Respawn head weighs in on Titanfall 2 sales

It’s no secret that Titanfall 2 has struggled to find its footing this past year with disappointingly low sales, despite the devs dropping free content on a regular basis. Now, Respawn boss Vince Zampella has weighed in on the matter, stating that game sales should have been stronger.

In an interview with GameSpot, Zampella revealed his thoughts on Titanfall 2’s lower-than-expected sales and its journey thus far. “The game was successful, it sold well, but it didn't quite sell as well as it should have,” Zampella acknowledged. “Maybe because it was super-crowded, the pricing was aggressive–it was a rough window to launch our game.”

Titanfall 2 launched on October 28th, directly between behemoths Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which release on October 21st and November 4th respectively. Andrew Wilson, CEO of EA originally defended Titanfall 2’s launch date, stating that the three games accommodated “three types of players.”

While Zampella hopes that the franchise will continue with another main entry, the prospect of a Titanfall 3 has been cast into doubt and neither the developer or publisher has announced plans beyond the upcoming mobile entry Titanfall: Assault.

“It's important for us to keep the franchise going. ‘We're doing more Titanfall,’ which is the quote I'm supposed to say. We have our franchise creative director, who's in charge of safeguarding the franchise in multiple formats and making sure it continues to grow. There's some other things we're doing that haven't been announced just yet, but we're heavily invested in the Titanfall universe.”

Since the release of Titanfall 2: Ultimate Edition, Respawn does not plan to release more content for the game as they “want to work on new stuff,” according to Zampella. But there will be more Titanfall.

“We're working on more Titanfall–we're not announcing what that is yet, but there's a few other things in the works–the mobile game, which turned out fantastic and is super fun, the fans love it and allowed us to expand on what we did in the last games. So I'm pretty happy with what the franchise has become.”

Aside from these few unknown Titanfall projects, Respawn is currently working on a third-person Star Wars action game, directed by Stig Asmussen, who is best known for his role in the God of War series.

KitGuru Says: Whether shoehorning Titanfall 2’s release between two gaming giants was the direct cause of its disappointing sales or not, as fan from the first game it was heart-breaking to watch. I’m hoping for more Titanfall but will make do with whatever these devs push forward with in the meantime. What do you think of the series? Are you still playing Titanfall 2?

  1. I just got done playing it literally less than two minutes ago. I think it’s a marked improvement over CoD, which is a really similar game. The story was fun to play, the fact that there are platforming aspects was fun, and the guns feel cool to use. I don’t think I’ve found a weapon I hate. I played some multiplayer too, and it was fun. I’m usually a Battlefield type of guy, but I guess I have a soft spot for the Titanfall series. I certainly hope it gets a sequel. I remember thinking about how they hinted at a world with a good amount of lore in the “campaign” of the first game, and I had hoped they’d flesh it out. I think what this series needs is a novel or two to give more depth to the setting, while continuing relatively self contained stories in the main installments. Just my opinions though. I could understand why some folks wouldn’t enjoy it.

  2. it’s a good game but with short campaign story and must using ps plus for multiplayer. oh c’mon we already bought the game, why we must pay for playing too. They’re so greedy. If we must pay to play online, then make the game free like the other MMORPG.

  3. Buy a PC, buy the game on sale, play – no PS Plus. PS Plus is for Sony, and they are drinking your blood with this subscrption.
You got 2 choises: you pay tripple the price of a console in a short term, then you save your cash for upgrades while buying games cheap on sale. You only pay for internet so that you play online. You get to choose between graphics quality and FPS or both (depending on how much you spend). Cheaper in a long term.
Other choice: Pay for a console, buy the game at full retail price, Pay for PS Plus on top of your internet to play online (i.e. become Sony’s slave). You get worse graphics, worse fps and you pay HIGHER price in a long term.

  4. i bought this lemon and have nothing but trouble and cant log into my account keeps telling me my password is no good ea sucks big time from now on if a game is not on steam i will never buy it again ea is a rip off company they can keep there games

  5. Its a shame that it wasn’t able to build on the success of TitanFall one, but having just got back into playing TitanFall 2 I am loving it.. the different modes of game play in the multiplayer area are great. I actually prefer this to Halo 5 which everyone seems to rave about.
But my favorite part of this game is the fact that they got rid of the self aiming handgun from TitanFall one. OMG that gun is the bane of my life, its for people that have no skill so I’m glad its gone.
