Earlier this year, Apple made the surprise announcement that it would not be renewing its GPU licensing deal with Imagination Technologies. The decision clearly caught Imagination off guard and while no lawsuits have been filed yet, the company has put itself up for sale in an attempt to try and stay afloat.
Imagination Technologies lost around 70 percent of its market value after Apple announced that it would be parting ways with the company. At the time, Imagination execs said that they did not see how Apple could develop its very own graphics chip without stepping on one of Imagination's patents and with that in mind, it is predicted that a lawsuit is likely.
With to cease its licensing deal with Imagination in the next 15 to 24 months, the board has decided “to initiate a formal sale process” and has already engaged in discussions with potential buyers. While discussions have begun, the company warns in its statement that “there can be no certainty” that any offer will be made, or that a sale will definitely take place. Still, the company is looking.
With this news, shares in Imagination Technologies have risen by around 20 percent. The company is still thought to be hashing things out with Apple behind the scenes.
KitGuru Says: At one point in time, it seemed like Apple itself would acquire Imagination Technologies. However, that outcome seems very unlikely at this point. Either way, it will be interesting to see how this whole thing plays out.

If they do actually have to sell I hope AMD has the cash to do it this would give AMD a lot more IP in a few different areas for sure. I hope Intel and Nvidia or even Apple don’t beat them to the punch on this heck even Samsung or Qualcomm would be better to have it. But you watch Intel will swoop in and buy it up because lets face it they probably would like to have the IP rights so they can beef up their own iGPU’s.
Yep that sounds like a typical Apple move right there.
amd doesn’t have the cash, they are recovering thanks to ryzen atm.
Also they don’t need this company, neither nvidia does, there is nothing of their tech that can benefit them.
Intel on the other hand can use this tech and also they already own 16% of the company, I guess they are already licensing this tech and there will be no big benefit from getting the whole company. (we could have seen better graphics on intel chips if they where superior to amd or nvidia chips in some way).
On the other hand companies that can really benefit are most likely some of the Chinese tech giants who luck IPs and may want to get more, especially when you keep in mind that Imaginations is a complete package with both powerVR and MIPS technology in their portfolio.
Softbank should buy them, ARM + Imagination would make a pretty awesome team…..
