Valve confirms SteamVR support for Windows ‘Mixed Reality’ headsets

Last night, Microsoft began discussing its virtual reality plans for Windows in more detail, with more headsets on the way and plenty of software support lined up. We already know that Microsoft has some first-party games planned, including a Halo VR game but it seems that Microsoft has also been working with Valve to ensure some of its future headsets support SteamVR.

Given that Valve is the leading store for PC games, it makes the perfect choice for a cross-platform store for various virtual reality headsets. SteamVR support is already present for all major headsets, including the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Razer’s OSVR. Now with Microsoft branching out into VR gaming, Windows headsets will also be supported.

In a statement sent to UploadVR, Valve’s Joe Ludwig said the following: “The introduction of Windows Mixed Reality headsets is a big step forward for VR. Working with Microsoft to include SteamVR compatibility with these devices is also a big step in growing VR as an open platform for developers and consumers. With a broad range of hardware options available from leading PC manufacturers, the Steam community will have more choice than ever to experience the amazing potential of VR.”

This essentially means that when you have a compatible Windows VR headset plugged in, Steam will automatically detect the headset, any sensors and controllers you have hooked up. From there, you should be able to load up most VR games on Steam, unless they have specific requirements. Either way, supported headsets are listed on the store page of all VR games on Steam, so you’ll be able to check for sure before buying.

KitGuru Says: With so many PC companies now planning to launch VR headsets aimed at gamers, things are going to get very competitive in the VR-hardware market.
