John Romero just auctioned off his Doom 2 floppy discs for $3000

John Romero is something of an industry legend at this point, having helped build id Software into the giant it is today. As someone who has been in the industry for so long, he also happens to have a good collection of rare memorabilia- including original Doom 2 floppy discs, which just sold for over $3000.

Romero decided to auction off his set of Doom 2 floppy discs on eBay this week and it seems some hardcore fans of the franchise were more than interested. Within hours, bidding began closing in on $1000 and this afternoon, the auction ended with the winning big sitting at $3,150. Bidding started off at just $10, so even he may be a little surprised by how much attention this got.

Now $3,150 is a pretty crazy haul when you consider that there is no box or manual included. On top of that, given that these floppy discs are now 23 years old, the glue from the label is starting to lose its effect.

For those interested, this was version 1.7 of Doom 2, which was the first to see release. The game was spread across five floppy discs on PC.

KitGuru Says: There are some very serious retro game collectors out in the world, so I'm not too surprised to see these discs fetch such a high price. Hopefully whoever gets them will look after them well and keep them preserved.
