Microsoft and 343 Industries are working on Halo VR

Last night, Microsoft began discussing some of its future plans for Windows ‘mixed reality’ headsets. Not only will some upcoming headsets be supported by SteamVR but Microsoft is also working on some first-party content to get gamers on board, with the first announcement being ‘Halo VR’.

Halo is Microsoft’s biggest franchise by far, though traditionally the company has gone out of its way to keep Halo off of the PC platform. That started to change this year, with Halo Wars 2 coming to PC and with Halo VR on the horizon, it looks like we can expect Halo to appear on Windows systems much more often going forward.

Microsoft isn’t providing many details about the project just yet, so we aren’t sure what the developers have planned for Halo VR. Perhaps we will see the original game recreated in virtual reality, or perhaps this will end up being a short experience to help show off the tech and get more people interested in Windows VR headsets. Either way, it is still fairly exciting.

Aside from Halo, Microsoft also has a bunch of other apps planned for the Windows Mixed Reality platform, including SuperHot, ARK: Survival Evolved, I Expect You To Die and more. General entertainment apps are also on the way, including Sky VR, Hulu, Sony Pictures and Silver TV.

KitGuru Says: There was a short Halo demo for the Hololens shown at E3 a couple of years back so perhaps this will be a fleshed out version of that. It would need to be retooled for virtual reality though, as the Hololens is still not ready to be a consumer product.
