CD Projekt celebrates The Witcher’s 10th anniversary

The first entry in The Witcher video game series turns 10 this October 26th, and CD Projekt Red is celebrating early. The developer has released a video that reminisces over all of the hard work that has been put into bringing such a rich experience to the video game world.

Based on a series of books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, the series was adapted into the video game world by CD Projekt in 2007. Interestingly, Sapkowski didn’t see the value in video games at the time, willingly selling the rights to the video game for a set price speculated by NeoGAF to be as low as $10,000. Due to the lack of foresight to see just how gigantic these games would be, Sapkowski famously lost out on an opportunity, however has since praised the developers for their hard work and profited from the IPs international fame by securing an upcoming Netflix series.

The first in The Witcher series might not have gained as many accolades as its most recent iteration, but it is still held in high regard. This is not lost on CD Projekt, beginning its celebratory video with a beautiful establishing shot of Corvo Bianco vineyard on a sunny day. It’s worth noting that Corvo Bianco is key in The Witcher 3’s Blood and Wine DLC, and could potentially include spoilers for the keen eyes that look past the warm and welcoming scenery within.

Ciri is seen mingling with familiar faces of the series, greeted by Regis and passing Yennefer, Triss and many more. There’s no shortage of nostalgia and memories laden through the short encounters she has as she passes each one. Each bear a smile, drinking wine as Geralt shares a personal conversation with the viewer. This ends with the cast of characters gathered around him as he toasts the viewer, with the developer closing out with a message stating “Time is fleeting, but memories are forever.”

KitGuru Says: It’s touching on the nostalgia that the developer helped create, knowing how beloved the games truly are. I’ve personally not scratched too deep into the surface of what the games have to offer, but I recognise the quality and care that is unfortunately unique to this game instead of an industry standard. What do you think of The Witcher series?

I have started the first one 3 times already but I drop it soon after. It is not that I don’t like it, actually I think it is great but just as happened with NWN before it, again real life can’t let you have the time that those games need to pull you into their world.

  2. Was a live interview at PAX, yesterday, very good one, a part of it:

  3. I only have one tattoo on my body and that is a symbolic Witcher logo I had done around 8 or 9 years ago after an 87hr play through of the first Witcher game. These games are pure and simple escapism the likes of which only comes around once in a generation and were a true labour of love, crafted with meticulous attention to detail that inspire awe with every play through.
