Back in 2011, Splash Damage and Bethesda teamed up to launch a first-person shooter known as ‘Brink’. In the years following, the game was quickly forgotten with much of the player base on console and PC moving on to other titles. Now, it looks like Brink may be getting a second chance at life, as the game is now free to play on Steam.
The announcement was made in a very brief post on the Steam News section, which simply says: “BRINK is Now Free to Play on Steam! You decide the combat role you want to assume in the world of Brink as you fight to save yourself and mankind’s last refuge!”
Following this change, the game has mixed reviews on Steam. There seems to be a core group of fans that still love the game and remember playing it back in 2011, while others are less impressed.
If you’ve never seen or heard of Brink then here’s the basic run down. It’s a class-based first-person shooter that blends single-player and co-op elements with competitive multiplayer. The game is set in a futuristic city called ‘The Ark’ and players can either fight as part of the city’s security force, or as part of the resistance. The game has some parkour elements, which were far less common back in 2011.
If you end up enjoying the game then there are three DLCs available. The first two are weapon packs based on Fallout and DOOM. The third is called ‘Agents of Change’, which brings two new maps to Brink as well as new outfits and player abilities.
KitGuru Says: I never played Brink back when it first came out but it is intriguing to see the game now being given away for free out of the blue. Perhaps Bethesda has plans to revive the franchise as it recently did with Prey. Did any of you play Brink back in the day? What do you think of the game?
