Samsung’s Odyssey VR headset seems to be a true high-end competitor

We have been hearing rumours surrounding Samsung’s high-end Odyssey VR headset for some time now but it looks like all of the details are now out in the open. Samsung’s Oculus Rift and HTC VIVE competitor has officially been listed on Microsoft’s store, detailing its specs and price. On paper, the Odyssey is a very impressive headset and could end up giving HTC and Oculus a run for their money.

The Samsung Odyssey VR headset is part of Microsoft’s Windows 10 VR rollout. Over on the Microsoft Store, the Odyssey was listed early. The headset was shown as sporting an OLED display with a 2880×1600 panel, a resolution that quite a bit higher than the Rift and VIVE, which both sport 2160×1200 displays.

The Odyssey also has a 110 degree field of view, a 90Hz refresh rate, and integrated headphones and microphones, giving you everything you need to get started right off the bat. The headset ships with motion controllers, which is increasingly important in the VR market now, particularly due to the popularity of the VIVE and Oculus Touch, which most developers are now supporting.

We don’t know how the sensors will hold up compared to the Rift or VIVE but if Samsung can remain on par, then the Odyssey may end up being a big competitor, especially thanks to its higher resolution display. According to Microsoft’s listing, the Samsung Odyssey headset will begin shipping on the 6th of November, with a $499 price tag. This is cheaper than the HTC VIVE and on par price-wise with the Oculus Rift now that the summer sale is over.

KitGuru Says: I really enjoy my Oculus Rift but I do wish VR resolutions were higher. It will be interesting to get some hands on time with the Odyssey and see how it compares in that regard. Are any of you currently looking to jump into VR?
