Microsoft’s Surface keynote in October set to reveal new devices

Two weeks after Intel seemed to show off an unannounced Microsoft laptop, the next-generation Surface devices are pegged to be revealed next month. Invites for the company’s annual event have now been sent out, meaning we can expect “at least one” new device between October 31st and November 1st.

Microsoft Surface boss Panos Panay is holding a keynote during the two-day Future Decoded in London, where at least one of the devices is likely to be revealed. This is further backed up by reports from The Verge, whose “sources familiar with the company's plans” state that the devices will make an appearance.

Intel’s promotional video for its 8th generation Core processors showcased a never before seen black Microsoft Surface Book, prompting many to believe that this is the new tentatively title Surface Book 2 that could be debuted in just over a month’s time.

With a claimed 40 percent performance increase when compared to Kaby Lake, 8th-gen powered Surface devices potentially boast 4K screens alongside proprietary features such as Windows Mixed Reality compatibility and Windows Hello. This provides a much needed jump from the outdated processors featured in the current Surface lineup.

Microsoft are also set to release a new LTE version of the Surface Pro, the Surface Hub and ARM-powered Windows devices, making Future Decoded one to watch this year.

“We are on track to see Windows 10 on Snapdragon devices become available this year as previously shared,” a Microsoft spokesperson said to The Verge. “Microsoft and Qualcomm continue to work closely with our OEM partners ASUS, HP and Lenovo in bringing Always Connected devices featuring always-on LTE connectivity and great battery life to market.”

KitGuru Says: Surface devices have had a hard time lately, so it will be interesting to see whether Microsoft can hit the ground running on this new generation. With the backing of Intel’s new processors, it could give the company the much needed boost to maintain its high-end portable devices.
