If you've ever wanted to revisit Super Mario 64 with a group of friends then it is now easier than ever. This week, a new fan project called SM64 launched, allowing PC owners to play Super Mario 64 online with up to 24 other people.
SM64 is a modded version of the Super Mario 64 ROM created by Marshivolt, Melonspeedruns and Kaze Emanuar. It has been modded to allow for online connectivity while also allowing players to select their own characters so you can run around as whoever you like. Characters include Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, Waluigi, Yoshi etc.
The modded version of Super Mario 64 is already picking up steam, with the trailer for it trending highly on YouTube in the UK. The video also has almost 500,000 views despite only being uploaded within the last 24 hours. With that in mind, this project is sure to attract Nintendo's attention fairly soon and as we've seen in the past, Nintendo is not shy about shutting down fan projects. With that in mind, you may want to download a copy of this as soon as possible.
If you aren't sure how to get the whole thing up and running, then Kaze Emanuar has also uploaded a fairly quick tutorial on all the settings you need get Super Mario 64 running online.
KitGuru Says: Super Mario 64 is always going to be a fondly remembered high point for the series. Being able to run around that world again with a few friends actually sounds like a lot of fun, though we have no idea whether or not Nintendo will try to shut this down when it gets word of it.
This is a very classical game. Can I play it on my NOMU S30 mini?
