Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode had one million players at launch

Fortnite found itself involuntarily in the middle of some controversy last week after the studio behind PUBG blasted the game's Battle Royale mode as a rip-off. Still, this doesn't appear to have deterred players at all, as Fortnite's Battle Royale game mode managed to garner over one million players the day of its launch.

Bluehole, the company behind PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds took issue with Epic Games last week and their latest project, Fortnite. It seems Bluehole isn't happy about the fact that it is licensing Unreal Engine from Epic, only for the studio to turn around and create a similar game mode. For the time being, Epic Games appears to be staying quiet on the issue and is instead focusing on promoting Fortnite's Battle Royale mode. Over on Twitter, the Fortnite page announced that the game had garnered over one million players on its first day:

This likely refers to total players throughout the day, rather than concurrent players. On top of that, Fortnite Battle Royale is currently free to play with no microtransactions, which will help boost interest in the game mode. Ultimately, Battle Royale is being used as a way to get players interested in the IP, in hopes that they will then go on and buy the full game.

Gear acquired through Battle Royale can be taken back to Fortnite's campaign for those who own it. However, owners of the game can't bring their single-player items into Battle Royale, thus avoiding any competitive advantage by owning the game.
