Update: Netflix set to raise its subscription prices again, UK pricing confirmed

Over the last couple of years, Netflix has been easing its subscribers in to price hikes and unfortunately this year, there will be another one. Existing customers will start paying a higher price for the standard and Ultra-HD streaming packages.

Netflix made the announcement earlier today that its standard streaming plan would be jumping from $9.99 per month to $10.99 a month. This plan includes streaming to two devices at once and HD streaming. The Premium plan is jumping from $11.99 to $13.99, which includes streaming on up to four devices and access to Ultra-HD quality.

Netflix issued a brief statement, saying that pricing was adjusted to help add “more exclusive TV shows and movies” as well as introduce more product features. This makes sense, as Netflix has been investing more and more in creating original content to bring people over to its platform.

These pricing changes will be introduced internationally too. In Europe, pricing will jump by one Euro for the standard package and two Euros for premium. UK pricing has yet to be confirmed but we will update when we hear more on that front.

Update: New UK pricing changes are now confirmed. The 1080p and two device streaming plan will now cost £7.99 per month and the Ultra-HD/four device streaming plan will cost £9.99 per month.

KitGuru Says: I use Netflix often enough to make the price worth it but I imagine there will be a number of complaints about this, particularly from international users. It’s no secret that there is a lot more content locked to the US region compared to other parts of the world. What do you guys think of this move? Will this make you reconsider your subscription or are you happy to keep paying the new price?

  1. So UK price will probably go up £20 the haha

  2. Just started with the free first month of the 4k plan. If the price rises, I’ll not be continuing once the increase hits in, otherwise I’ll carry on paying the £8.99 as reasonable value for what is offered.

  3. keep bringing out shows like Narcos and Stranger Things and i’ll keep paying.

  4. It takes money to make money or shows. That it took this long and is only a dollar is what’s truly surprising to me.

  5. It’s being raised from £8.99 to £9.99

  6. Typo should have been £2
But still rare to not get screwed in the uk

  7. It’s being raised from £8.99 to £9.99

  8. Considering renting one HD film is roughly £4.50, Netflix is great value for money even with a £1 price hike.

  9. I have just unsubscribed

  10. A one dollar/euro/pound per month price hike is not really that much. Considering what you get for it. If that one pound is what sets you over the edge to go back to downloading illegally, that’s kind of pathetic. If you switch to cheaper services, fair enough, Netflix is not for everyone.

But for shows like The Crown, Daredevil, Star Trek: Discovery (not a NF exclusive, but you need NF to watch it outside the US), Luke Cage, Stranger Things, Marseille, House of Cards, Master of None, and Castlevania, I’ll happily pay the additional euro.

  11. Am, this is the start of it. Six months time they will be looking for even more.
    Its a US company.
They will push the price as high as they can as fast as they can.
People like me who unsubscribe will put them off for a while.
I will look at other options for my content 😉

  12. You right.
They will keep pushing the price. Six months time after the winter TV schedule they will be doing even more new content and looking for even more money.

  13. I got mixed feelings about this. I said last year that when the first price hike happened this is just the beginning of the price raising it now seems I was right. I am going to assume it will raise another $1 next year as well. At some point you have to ask if it is actually worth it. Right now it is and even with another $1 raise it is still worth it. But if they keep raising the price each year they will probably price themselves out of customers. Then again there are way to many people out there that do not have a clue about the value of money and will pay pretty much anything.

I use Netflix a lot they make a few shows that were pretty entertaining and the rest not so much. But it does take money to make money & these shows. It also probably does not help that Disney pulled out as well.

I live in Canada and my thinking is if they want to charge more and make us pay the same as the US customer do then they should have the same programming available to Canadian customers. Right now Netflix has different shows & movies for each country or the shows are a year behind the US or just not there at all. People all over Canada try to get US Netflix just because it is so much better with so much more to choose from for shows & movies. If they want to charge the same for each country then give us the same choices.

I know it is not totally Neflix’s fault here because they have to deal with each countries internal governments and are only allowed to show what those governments will allow. I would have thought that after all of these years Netflix would have been able to work through all of this and make the proper deals to get past all of this garbage red tape.

  17. We’ll see, the price has been pretty stable, a hike of one dollar every year and a half to two years is not that bad. That’s a bit more than inflation, sure, but considering the increased service (many more tv shows), I’m happy to pay it. Seeing the massive and absurd price hikes of high-end phones, (20-30% per two-year generation), this is peanuts.

It still offers far more bang for my buck than HBO does; Westworld and GoT alone are not enough (most of John Oliver is on YT legally).
