Third-party Switch games take up a lot of space

Earlier this year, we learned that at least one early Nintendo Switch game would take up more space than the console’s on-board storage could provide. At first, this seemed like a fringe case but as we head towards the end of 2017, there are plenty of additional third-party games taking up well over 20GB of storage, indicating that an SD card is going to be an essential purchase for Switch owners going forward.

The Nintendo Switch comes with 24GB of useable storage out of the box. Nintendo’s own games, like The Legend of Zelda, Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Odyssey take up minimal space. However, third-party games are taking up north of 20GB. For starters, earlier this year NBA 2K18 landed on the Switch, taking up 22.9GB if you buy it digitally. If you buy the physical version, you still need to go through a 6.9GB download and have an extra 5GB of space handy per save file.

Now as Kotaku points out, this is no longer a fringe case. Rockstar’s LA Noire is going to take up 29GB if bought digitally and the physical version still requires a 14GB download. DOOM on the Switch takes up 25GB if bought digitally while the physical version requires a 9GB download if you want to play multiplayer.

WWE 2K18 requires a 24GB download even if bought physically. Finally, Resident Evil Revelations 1 takes up 13GB while the sequel takes up 26GB of space.

If you are planning on getting a Nintendo Switch, or if you already own one, then a microSD card is going to be a wise investment if you plan on picking up more third-party titles. Nintendo recommends that microSD users pick up one with between 90MB/s and 100MB/s speeds. On Amazon at the moment, you can get a Sandisk Class 10 128GB microSD card fo £42, meanwhile you can get a 200GB microSD for £70.

KitGuru Says: I currently have a 64GB microSD card in my Switch but even that is starting to become a struggle. Do many of you own a Switch yet? Have you already picked up a microSD card for it?

  1. This is nothing less than a fail by Nintendo. Anyone but a complete idiot could have seen this coming; so now the Switch has just become 40 quid more expensive, because you cannot use it without the additional investment. That’s well over a 12% price increase.

I want the Switch, but this is just one more thing holding me back from buying it at its current price.

  2. Wow. Those high capacity SD cards are not cheap, and you HAVE to get a few if you plan on gaming a lot on the switch. But that’s nintendo. They should just concentrate of being a nintendo exclusives (which are small sized games) and indie gaming tablet. Today’s games eat tons of space, and many people bounce in between multiple games.

  3. I have my Switch for Nintendos and partner games like Mario+Rabbids and a few others like the Lego franchise so no problem. If I want to play DOOM, Skyrim or something similar I get them for my PC.

  4. Thats you (and me)……but a lot of people can’t afford having a box for every occasion.

  5. That’s a pity but that’s also life. If you want more you have to pay more, if you can’t afford a additional SD card where you can install many games on then you can’t afford a new game. This may sound harsh but it’s reality. At least there is only one Switch with SD capabilities and not various with different capacities for 50 bucks more each tier.

  6. tell that to little tina or timmy lol. the shame goes to nintendo for releasing a gaming tablet that is going to get console like draw and interest from gamers who expect devices to have ample room for todays technology.

Nintendo isn’t the only one. My friend didn’t believe me when I told her just how quick her 1TB drive on her xOne X was going to fill up with just a handful of AAA games today. I have a 5TB drive on my PC just for games that is about half full and a 2TB ext drive on my 360 for games that more than halfway filled. I don’t delete games so I understand your point.

  7. That’s why I’m deleting games that I don’t play so I can use my 1TB SSD for them. Yes, the Switch could/should have more storage but I think it is still great that you can upgrade the storage easily and not that expensive (200GB for 80€, don’t forget it’s a portable console).
