Pokémon Ultra Sun & Moon brings back baddies for villain supergroup

If there is one thing that’s certain about Pokémon, it’s that it utilises nostalgia in a super effective way. Upcoming titles Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are no different, not only bringing back every legendary Pokémon, but every mob boss, starting with Team Rocket’s Giovanni.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon’s latest trailer is a blast from the past ahead of its release later this month, showcasing Team Rocket leader Giovanni hailing from Red and Blue and last seen in generation five’s Black and White 2 during the Pokémon World Tournament.

“Giovanni Strikes Back,” a clever pun on the follow-up film to the anime’s first movie, as he heads a new and improved organisation aptly named Team Rainbow Rocket, acting as a supergroup comprised of every villain boss to have appeared in the franchise. The player will “battle through 20 years of Villainy,” bringing back Archie and Maxie from Gen-3, Cyrus from Gen-4, Ghetsis from Gen-5 and Lysandre from Gen-6.

It’s unclear how integral this will be to the story of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon, however villainous teams combining into one supervillain group is a move that should have been in the making a long time ago.

Alongside the new villains comes every in-game legendary Pokémon, able to be caught through Ultra Wormholes. These legendaries, along with their Mega Stones will be split between the two new entries. There is no sign of mythical Pokémon such as Mew, Celebi, Arceus or the likes, so it can be assumed that these will still be confined to events.

Also included in the trailer is The Battle Agency and Totem Stickers. The former sees trainers renting Pokémon to battle one on one against “powerful characters” to “earn rare items,” while the latter is a treasure hunt to collect stickers, enabling the player to get totem-sized Pokémon.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon comes out pm 17th November for the Nintendo 3DS.

KitGuru Says: It seems like there’s a lot more in store for the updated versions of the games than I originally thought. Unfortunately, I didn’t take well enough to Sun or Moon to still be fully sold at this point. Are you excited for Ultra Sun and Moon?
