For quite a few years now, Amazon has been trying to edge its way into the video games space, with the multi-trillion dollar company’s first big effort being the MMO New World. Despite a mixed reception, the publisher has taken another swing in the genre – with the recently-released Throne and Liberty launching to over 3 million total players.
Making the announcement via a press release, the team at Amazon Games shared the following statement:
“Global players have shown their enthusiasm for THRONE AND LIBERTY in the days since the free-to-play massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by NCSOFT and published by Amazon Games made its global launch on Oct. 1, with more than 3 million registered players answering the call to reclaim Solisium.”
Speaking on this figure, the VP of Amazon Games ‘Christoph Hartmann’ said “Bringing THRONE AND LIBERTY to players around the world has been a huge shared undertaking by our team and our friends at NCSOFT, and we’re so pleased to see the results as players join the game. We’re only getting started, and we have a series of updates planned including our first castle siege coming soon.”
It is worth noting that unlike New World, Throne and Liberty is a free-to-play game. Even so, this latest release has failed to match the launch success of the former, with New World seeing over 900,000 concurrent players at launch, compared to Throne and Liberty’s 336,000 concurrents.
Of course, as with many MMOs, the game will likely continue to improve, and so we will have to wait and see how the long-term success of Throne and Liberty compares to New World.
